ST MIRREN manager Jack Ross has told his players they must start replicating their cup form in the Championship.

The Buddies have defied their status as the basement club in the second tier to reach the Scottish Cup quarter-finals and Irn-Bru Cup final.

But St Mirren’s three victories from their last five games have all been in cup competition, and Ross’s team are without a league win in seven matches ahead of Saturday’s bottom-of-the- table clash at Ayr United.

The Paisley outfit are eight points adrift of the Honest Men and Ross has demanded his players redress their Championship record.

Ross, whose side beat Welsh outfit The New Saints in Sunday’s Irn-Bru Cup semi-final, said: “I talk about momentum and it’s something we’ve not managed to do since I took over the job in October, in terms of a consistent run of victories.

“With our recent form, we’ve got three defeats in 12 and one in six. That’s okay, it’s good going but we need to be winning league games.

“When we don’t win league games people focus on that because that’s the position we’re in. We won in the cup the previous week at East Fife and won last week, we’re scoring goals on a regular basis.

“Our aim is to go and win the game then we start building momentum. Once we build that momentum then I’m confident we’ll be difficult to stop.”
