I WORE the jersey, I lived with the pressure. But I was very lucky – because I also scored the goals.

I know what it takes to be the Rangers centre-forward, so I know exactly how Joe Garner must be feeling right now when it just isn’t going right for him, and, shows no sign of improving.

I’ll be honest, there have been times when he just hasn’t looked up to it – amazing given that I was so excited when he first arrived. He scored with either foot, with the head, tap-ins or from distance. But –  while he scored against Dundee – the boy is struggling, and to be honest, I don’t think he’s had anyone doing him any favours.

When I was playing, I had either Derek Parlane or Gordon Smith up front with me; the burden was shared.

But all the onus, as the only target man is on Garner. And he just isn’t getting the service.

I had the likes of Willie Johnston, or Davie Cooper, or Cutty Young, or Bobby McKean, or Tommy McLean firing balls in my direction, 20 or 30 times a game. There are some times where this Rangers side don’t create a chance in a match.

Joe Garner is not different to others in the past. The benchmark at Rangers for the centre forward is very simple – how many goals you score. And on that scale, Garner is way off the pace.
