Brendan Rodgers has invited TalkSport host and former Chelsea player Jason Cundy to Celtic Park to judge the Parkhead side for himself.

Cundy irked the Celtic support this week when he belittled the achievements of the season and then insisted that the club were not particularly well supported outside of Glasgow.

He went onto say that Celtic would struggle in the Championship and League One, but Rodgers was measured in his criticism of the 47-year-old.

“I know Jason, I worked with him at Chelsea so I know what he is like,” said the Celtic manager. "He obviously has to create a programme which stimulates conversation.

"It's ignorance really.

"With all due respect, it's a lack of knowledge of football.

"The footballing world is more than the Premier League.

"But if your eyes are only on one league then of course you tend to ignore what's around that.

"We all love to see the Premier League and I was part of it but football is global and Celtic is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"He is a good boy Jason, I know him well but I probably understand what he is trying to do with his comments.

"He will always be welcome to Celtic Park and he would be surprised I am sure."

Meanwhile, Rodgers is wary of St Mirren on Sunday given the unpredictability of the Cup competitions.

Celtic host the Paisley side in the quarter-final of the William Hill Scottish Cup on Sunday, with a win taking the Parkhead side within two games of a Treble.

Ronny Deila’s side were denied that feat in the Norwegian’s first season at Celtic because of a clanger of a referring mistake at Hampden – something that Rodgers has watched back.

“You could get a player sent off or there could be a poor decision from the ref,” said Rodgers. "But this is a team we are developing to cope with whatever happens.”

"That decision at Hampden against Inverness was incredible really.

"But they key is...how can we react to that situation if it ever does happen. That's what we prepare for.

"The ambition has always been to be the best we can be. That was the message when I came in. The players had won the league five times but how can we be the best?

"That is down to how we work every day.

"It might look easy and the points tally might make it feel as if it's easy from the outside.

"But there is so much work going into it.”
