Shettleston Juniors went top of the McBookie.com Super League First Division on Saturday after beating Renfrew 3-1 at Greenfield Park.

The hosts opened the scoring with less than a minute on the clock when captain Ricki McIntosh fired a shot past Frew goalkeeper Dale Burgess from 20 yards.

Shettleston continued to dominate proceedings after the opener, but they would have to wait until the second half to extend their advantage further.

McIntosh netted his second moments after the restart, this time from the spot after a Renfrew defender was deemed to have handled the ball in the box.

Renfrew would pull a goal back through Kieran Healy, however, David Fry put the final nail in the visitor's coffin when he blasted home a free kick from range to make it 3-1.

Shettleston boss John Fallon says he was delighted with his side's performance and insists his side could have won by a much bigger margin.

He said: “I’m delighted with how we played, from the first whistle to the last we were the best team by a country mile.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better performance, we played some great football and scored some really nice goals.

“I think we should have won by two or three more goals, we were just that good.”

Shettleston now sit two points clear of Kilsyth Rangers at the top of the table having played two more games than the Gers.

Fallon admits Kilsyth Rangers have the advantage in the title race, but insists he’d much rather have points on the board than games in hand.

He said: “We may be top at the moment, but that can all change if Kilsyth win their games in hand, however, there’s no guarantee they will.

“This is a very tough league, there are no easy games so whoever they come up against will give them a difficult game.

“It isn’t ideal having to rely on other teams beating them, but I think we are in a good situation as we already have the points in the bag while they still need to go out and get them.”

Renfrew co-manager Colin Clark says he was appalled by his side's display on Saturday and branded their performance as the worst he’s ever seen.

He said: “The best team won that’s for sure, Shettleston were utterly dominant and deserved to get the win.

“I just can’t believe how poor we were, we played like a pub team and that’s probably being disrespectful to some pub teams.

“We were appalling, I can honestly say it was the worst performance I have ever seen in all my years in football.”

The Frew boss admits he feels bad for the fans that made the trip through to Shettleston and says his players owe them an apology.

Clark said: “To tell you the truth I feel terrible for our supporters, the fact they had to pay to watch their team play like that is awful.

“We all owe the fans a massive apology, especially the players as they were the ones who really let them down.”

Elsewhere this weekend mother nature caused havoc to the junior football schedule yet again resulting in 17 out of 31 games in the west region being postponed.

The biggest call-off this weekend saw Maryhill and Linlithgow Rose’s Scottish Junior Cup tie postponed for the third time in a row.

The match has been rescheduled for this Saturday, but has been moved from Maryhill’s Lochburn Park to St Anthony's McKenna Park
