A SHORT and succinct to-do list awaits Pedro Caixinha when he does eventually get behind his new desk after becoming Rangers manager.

It will be written on a single piece of paper and is going to include only two words.

And they will be CHANGE EVERYTHING.

This is not going be an easy task for the Portuguese if indeed he does leave behind the relative calm of football in Qatar for the absolute madness of Glasgow.

However, Caixinha should not concern himself too much about what has to happen in the long-term, which just so happens to be plenty. It's important, but for another day.

What happens on the actual park must be his priority. As a service, SportTimes is here to help.

Whether the 46-year-old’s stay down Ibrox way is short or long, even Nostradamus would think twice about placing a bet on what happens next at the football club, his first task is to get the team playing again.

Here we take a look at what Caixinha has to do in what is going to be an interesting and perhaps brutal introduction to his new life.

ALLOW GRAEME MURTY TO TAKE THE CELTIC GAME

This might feel like throwing the interim manager under the bus, but it is the right thing to do.

Murty has emerged with a reputation in tact from the past few weeks, the players do respect him and if Celtic win, as almost everyone is predicting, then it’s no way for a new man to start.

Indeed, Murty will get away with it, so to speak, and anything else will be viewed as a huge bonus. It could even guarantee the Under-20s coach a job with the first-team.

Caixinha should sit in the stand or even stay away altogether, even if that would feel slightly strange given then he’s been paid for the off.

Wherever he watches the game, it should be as a spectator; take a look at the team, get a sense what he has to work with then get properly going the next day.

GET THE MESSAGE THROUGH THAT THE FUTURE IS THE ONLY THING WHICH MATTERS

The players have to forget the defeats, the 5-1 Old Firm match, Joey Barton, Mark Warburton and everything else. What counts is what happens from here on in.

Caixinha has to sit down the squad and explain to them the season, for all that’s left of it, begins as soon as he officially takes over.

Second place is still possible as is a Scottish Cup Final. However, more importantly is the supporters have to see a lot more from their team.

Oh, and that quite a few are playing for their Rangers careers. Such threats tend to work.

ASK THE PLAYERS WHAT HAS BEEN GOING WRONG

It’s not been a happy camp for a while and so there is nothing wrong with him simply putting the question to his charges.

It would be wrong to say Warburton wasn’t liked within the dressing room, although not everyone was sad to see him go, but was his way or you were out the side

Murty has taken only a few weeks to make Rangers a more flexible if not brilliant team.

SORT OUT THE DEFENCE

Difficult to do quickly, but this is essential in terms of going forward.

Portuguese coaches are rightly known for the defensive approach; from Jose Mourinho down. Rangers could do with some know-how in how to stop the opponent from scoring.

Perhaps do some practice regarding clearing their lines at set-pieces. Just a thought.

DO NOT TRY TO KID THE FANS WITH ANY SORT OF LINE

Let’s be honest, nobody really knows what Caixinha is all about in terms of his approach to football or as a bloke.

It will take a while for him show his capabilities as a manager, but the first press conference will offer a hint towards what his personality is.

My tip: don’t promise the world, speak plainly about the football philosophy, don’t bang on about great fans and traditions (it’s okay to admit it’s all new instead of reading from a script) and be yourself.

Did we ever see the real Warburton?

GET QUICKLY INTO YOUR HEAD THAT AT RANGERS IT’S ALL ABOUT WINNING

This is especially important right now.

Rangers could finish fourth or second. Winning some matches, believe it or not, will determine what their league position will be.

Caixinha will be judged right away, that’s the gig, and while supporters understand miracles don’t happen at once, if they can see the new manager grasps that playing okay in a home draw with Ross County is not something to crow up, it would be a decent start.

AND AFTER ALL THIS?

Well, there is the shambles of the scouting system, a youth system which hasn’t provided nearly enough players, a need to spend money wisely in the transfer market instead of wildly, look to bring in some, to use a dreaded word in football, characters this summer, and forge a relationship with Dave King.

But that is all to come. Right away, Caixinha has a ship to steady and a season to see out.

It’s not an impossible job, far from it, and the first few weeks have got to be about getting his ideas over to a group of players who have had the confidence kicked out of them.

As for closing the gap to Celtic; that is not his department, not really. It’s up to the board to find more money and then spend it better. Best to allow the new guy to get on with the football for now.
