Kilmarnock interim manager Lee McCulloch admits that he has still not decided whether he wants the Rugby Park job on a permanent basis or not.

The former Rangers and Killie player made the step up to assistant manager under Lee Clark last year, then took the reins temporarily when Clark left the club last month.

He has led the side to an impressive win at St Johnstone as well as narrow home defeats to Aberdeen and Motherwell since.

But while he says that he is enjoying certain aspects of the job, he has yet to be convinced if taking on the post on a full-time basis is for him.

“I’m no further forward since the first time we spoke,” McCulloch said. “I honestly don’t know.

“It is literally the oldest cliché in the book, but it is a day at a time. That is the truth.

“Am I enjoying it? I am enjoying the responsibility, I’m enjoying the training, I’m enjoying picking the team.

“I am not enjoying telling players they are not playing as I am not used to that.

“You are thinking about things every minute of every day. Your phone is going non-stop and it is quite intense.

“It is for some people and it isn’t for others. The difference from being a coach to assistant manager is huge. The difference from assistant to actually being manager is even bigger.

“It is something you need to deal with and something I think I’m dealing with quite well.

“It’s just all about getting the team ready for Saturday. It is a massive game for us.”

With McCulloch reluctant to think about taking on the job he is currently in on a permanent basis, it was a shock for him to see his name linked with the manager’s post at former club Motherwell too.

His loyalty to the Kilmarnock board would likely rule such a move out even if the interest from Fir Park was genuine.

“It is very flattering but possibly just speculation,” he said.

“I just want to keep going, that’s the way I have been through my career.

“I want to learn every day. I say to the players, it is not just about coming in to train just to tick a box and go through the motions. It is about getting better every day.”

The interim Killie boss is down to the bare bones in midfield for Saturday’s crucial trip to Ross County, with Gary Dicker and Rory McKenzie both suspended and Stevie Smith injured.

There is however some light at the end of the tunnel for Greg Kiltie, who has been out since undergoing surgery on a tendon behind his knee in October.

“He played 20 minutes of an Under 20s game on Tuesday,” McCulloch said. “He won’t be involved at the weekend.

“We are delighted for him to have a strip on again. He is not to be rushed as he has been out for that long and it would be poor of me to put a time frame on it.”
