SCOTLAND face Slovenia in a crucial match at Hampden on Sunday, with nothing less than a win being good enough to keep their slim hopes alive of qualifying for the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia…

STEVE M (Edinburgh) – I recently bought my ticket for the qualifier against Slovenia at Hampden on Sunday. We haven't played them very often as they are a fairly new country. What is our record against them?

Slovenia was formed in 1991 when it separated from Yugoslavia and Scotland have played them three times previously. The record stands at one win and two draws in our favour.

The first two games were qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup. The first game was a 0-0 draw on September 8, 2004, under Berti Vogts, at Hampden, before a crowd of 38,279.

By the time the return game in Slovenia came round in October 2005, Berti Vogts had been replaced by Walter Smith and the Scots won 3-0 with goals from Darren Fletcher, James McFadden and Paul Hartley (his only goal for Scotland).

The third game was a friendly in Slovenia was on February 29, 2012, Craig Levein was now manager, at the SRC Bentifika Stade and ended in a 1-1 draw with Christophe Berra scoring for Scotland.

Incidently, Craig Gordon and Darren Fletcher were the only survivors from the original squad in 2004.

DAVID (Paisley) – When was the first time Scotland played Canada in a full international match and what is our record against the Canadians?

Scotland first played Canada on June 12, 1983, in Vancouver.

Scotland won the match 2-0 and believe it or not, the scorers for Scotland were Gordon Strachan and Mark McGhee.

We have won all five encounters with Canada.

JOHN (Carntyne) – Who scored Scotland’s goal in a 1-0 victory over the World Champions Argentina in 1990. My brother thinks it was Stewart McKimmie of Aberdeen?

Your brother is spot on. Stewart McKimmie scored after 32 minutes of the first half. He sent a sweet half-volley sailing past the Argentinian keeper Pumpido.
