DAVE KING might not be having much fun as Rangers chairman right now but he is doing a crucial job for the club.

I can understand where Dave is coming from when he spoke about all the things he has had to deal with since he, Paul Murray and John Gilligan got the keys to Ibrox a couple of years ago.

He also addressed the fears that some supporters have over how often he is in Glasgow. There are some who would like him to be based here, but that is not going to happen.

His life, his family and his business is in South Africa and he can do what he has to do for Rangers from there. I don’t think it is a big deal that he is not here all the time.

When you have someone like Stewart Robertson as managing director, Dave doesn’t need to be in Glasgow to run Rangers. Stewart takes care of the day-to-day business and Dave will always be available on the other end of the phone or via e-mail.

There are guys like Paul, John and Graeme Park there as well and they are more than capable of helping out.

It was interesting that Dave was saying he would talk to someone if they felt they could do a better job of being Rangers chairman.

If there is anyone interested in helping Rangers, either in terms of a boardroom role or in a financial sense, then Dave will always listen to them.

If there are people out there that can help the board take Rangers forward then they know Dave will be open to a proposal.

Being the chairman of Rangers is clearly taking a lot out of his life but, as he said, it is what he signed up for and he will do the job to the best of his ability.

We are going through another difficult period off the park right now and a lot of that is down to Mike Ashley and Sports Direct. There are more court dates coming up and that will take up time and money but they are fights that have to be fought.

Rangers need strong characters to defend the club. They inherited so many problems when they took control at Ibrox and they are the ones that have to try and fix it. We have the right people in place to fight Ashley, and anyone else that is trying to take advantage of the club.

Overall, I am sure Dave and the board will be pleased with the progress that they have made and they are certainly going in the right direction.

I think every Rangers fan will be delighted with the board and the job they have done in the last couple of years. They have all got the club at heart, none of them take money out of the club and they are all there with the same goal and that is to make Rangers successful again. If that is to take time, then they will see it out.

Fans want things done quickly and they are not prepared to wait a long time, especially at a club like Rangers. As soon as someone comes in, they want success. It is not quite as simple as that, though.

They want transparency and they have heard a lot from Dave this week. They know where he stands on a range of issues and how he sees the future for himself and the club.

It is just over two years since regime change and the vast majority of the fans will be pleased with the job that the board have done since then.

First and foremost, they are supporters and they want success for Rangers. They are in a position to help the club financially and they will continue to do so. They have been first class.

It is not about fame, it is not about making a name for themselves or making money. There are Rangers fans on the board and long may that continue.

The investors we have right now have put a lot of money in already and they will continue to do so going forward. We haven’t really seen the benefit of that on the park this season but there has been money spent at Ibrox and Auchenhowie and investment across the club.

Rangers are relying on these fans putting their own money in but that can only happen for so long. In time, there will probably need to be other investors coming in and money will have to come from different sources.

But for now it will be the same group that will pick up the bill and we will see what is spent during the summer transfer window.

The board, the manager, the fans and the players will know that there has to be a higher quality of player added to the squad. Come the summer, there is no doubt that money will be required to improve the team.

We are not talking about £5million players but there has to be additions and the supporters will want to see who is coming in, especially when the season ticket renewal forms start dropping through their letterbox.

The manager met with Dave this week and he will have been asking what his budget will be and they would have discussed potential targets.

Whatever the budget it, it is up to Pedro to make the most of it as we look to keep moving forward once again next season.
