Celtic skipper Scott Brown has hinted that he will stay on for Gordon Strachan as Scotland face up to England in June at Hampden – but he will seek Brendan Rodgers’ blessing first.

Brown became the Celt who has captained Scotland most often on Sunday evening when he led the country out and after the win that keeps Strachan’s side fighting for their lives in the qualification group, the midfielder suggested that he could be in the fray for the game against the English.

The 31-year-old came out of what was a brief retirement when he played at Wembley in October but with Celtic reporting back to pre-season training on June 20th to prepare for critical UEFA Champions League qualifiers, just ten days after the game against England, there was a general consensus that Brown would not feature.

However, the last gasp win on Sunday evening gives Scotland an outside chance of a play-off spot and Brown could well be in the mix for that one.

“I was waiting on that one coming,” smiled Brown after the game. “There is a lot to think about now. I have got to go back and discuss one or two things with Brendan Rodgers because the main priority for me is that I maintain a level of performance for my club, first and foremost.

“I need to work on Scotland and see what comes after this but I will speak to Gordon, I will speak to Brendan and then I will make a decision but it is fair to say I will speak to them first.

“I had six weeks off last summer and I do think it was a big factor in being able to hit the ground running this season. So there is a lot to think about. It is obviously a big game now so we will wait and see what happens but I will speak to the gaffer at Celtic when I get back.”

Celtic could win the title this weekend, but Brown would not welcome any time off at this stage of the season. There was a suggestion that Rodgers might rest his captain, as well as other key players who have featured regularly this season, but Brown himself is unwilling to get his feet up prematurely.

With a William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final looming against Rangers at Hampden and the potential to go through the season unbeaten, Brown is determined to continue the form that he has showed throughout this term.

“I don’t want a break,” he said. “We have a massive semi-final back at Hampden and we want to go as many games as possible without being beaten domestically. I want to maintain my level of fitness and the standard I have set this season and I don’t want to be out of the team for any reason.

“I am feeling good and if you are feeling good then I think you want to keep going.”
