RANGERS are set to step up their search for a Director of Football to put the finishing touches to the new Ibrox management structure.

Boss Pedro Caixinha is close to making an appointment to bring a ‘local assistant’ on board after holding talks with several former Light Blues stars in recent days.

That will leave the Director of Football position as the only one still to be filled following the departures of Mark Warburton, David Weir and Frank McParland last month.

Gers Managing Director Stewart Robertson said: “We are taking a couple of weeks to get Pedro settled in and we will pick it up again this week.

“I know there was talk of it being ‘imminent’ but that’s imminent in the grand scheme of things not as in tomorrow.

“I won’t put a timeframe on it but we are applying some brainpower to that again.

“We will have a conversation with him (Caixinha) but we will narrow it down to our key candidates. He’s already bought into the structure, he knows that’s the one we are going for and he’s quite comfortable with that.

“You have to build a relationship and that will be a key part of us brining someone in. His relationship with Pedro will be key going forward.

“In an ideal world you would have the Director of Football in and he’d then appoint the manager and then he’d bring players in. That’s if life goes in a straight line, but very rarely does life go in a straight line.

“We will make contingency plans behind this to make sure that recruitment still happens over the summer.”

Boss Caixinha will be given funds to bolster his squad during the summer window as he gears up for what he hopes will be Rangers' European return and a crack at the Premiership next term.

But Robertson knows cash will need to be spent on other areas of the Light Blues’ football operations to ensure progression on and off the field in the coming years.

He said: “It will be a decent investment because we need to build a proper scouting and analysis network and not just in the UK.

“We need to look at where we will get value for players and have building blocks and start to look at the European market.

“I’m not saying we will fill the team with European players but we need to have a mix.

“If we are to close the gap then we have to close the revenue gap. How do you do that? Well one of the revenue streams we’ve not had has been player trading.

“We need to look at how we trade the squad and make money off that and it will be a key part of it going forward.”
