Celtic keeper Craig Gordon has insisted that the best is still to come this season as the Parkhead side knuckled down to work yesterday.

The 34-year-old has an eye on a Treble as well as the tantalising prospect of making a little bit of history by going through the season unbeaten.

And with the League Cup and the league title in the bag, Gordon is hungry to complete the final part of the jigsaw.

The Parkhead side could beat the current league points record – 103 which was set by Martin O’Neill side in 2004 – by taking 18 points from a possible 24 in their remaining eight games. Unbeaten so far in 37 domestic matches, Gordon is in no mood to relinquish that particular stat now.

“We are going out to enjoy ourselves against Thistle tomorrow night – but we are going to enjoy ourselves by playing the kind of football that we have all season,” he said. “We want the same performance.

“But we have plenty of characters and leaders in this squad and they will demand that we stay dominant, that we go into games with the same attitude, that we keep creating the same number of chances in games. If we do that then we will be in a good place. We don’t want the performances to drop off.

“We just want to keep going and finish as strongly as we possibly can and that can be the highlight come the end of the season. It has been a great season with some great performances but I don’t want to pinpoint one particular stand-out moment because there are still things that we are striving for. I am hoping that the highlight is still to come for us.”

And the Hoops keeper believes that keeping focus in the league will be the key to Celtic aiming for an unblemished campaign.

“Going through this season unbeaten is still a possibility,” he said. “I will be honest and say that we are aware of it, of course we are, but it is not what is fuelling the results; we want to win and we want to win by playing to a certain standard.

“We need to keep playing well and I think there are still a lot of games to play. It would be a huge effort to go through the season unbeaten but it is fair to say that is great to have got this far.

“I didn’t realise that it was well over 100 years ago since it was last done but I think the key for us is probably to concentrate on our performances and strive to sustain the standard we have set for ourselves. If we do that then we give ourselves a right good chance of winning any game.

“We will keep trying to churn out the wins and see where it takes us.”

There are only two managers in Celtic’s history who have achieved a domestic Treble – Martin O’Neill and Jock Stein.

Indeed, Celtic have enjoyed six successive titles just twice before in their 129-year history, suggesting that this season is already marked as something a little special.

“A Treble is a hard thing to do. You need to be so consistent. We have managed that until now but this is where we really need to make sure that we are doing the hard work and giving ourselves every opportunity to win every game.”
