Brendan Rodgers believes that Scott Sinclair would be an ideal fit for England as Gareth Southgate’s side prepare to take on Scotland at Hampden in June.

Sinclair is favourite to be named the SPFA Player of the Year this season after an impressive debut campaign at Celtic in which he has netted 23 goals and been pivotal to the manner in which Rodgers’ side play.

However, while the competition for places in England would make a call-up something of a shock, Rodgers believes that Sinclair has already proved he is operating at that level.

“He has got a lot of choice, Gareth,” said Rodgers. “But, yes, if they are looking at a player of technique who provides a genuine goal threat. It is interesting because Gareth played 3-4-3 in one of their last games, at times which we play, so he knows the role and you need people who are direct and who can score goals and play.

“What Scotty has shown which maybe he hadn’t in the last few years is that he has the confidence. I am very much a manager and a coach who tries to improve weaknesses, but I am all about looking at player’s strengths and what they are good at, making them better.

“With Scotty, I think he has shown that. With Scotty and with England he suits the criteria; he is fast, he is strong, he has good technique, he has an eye for goal and he is robust and he works hard. It wouldn’t surprise me, having worked with some of the players at that level closely, because he is certainly at that level.”

Meanwhile, Leigh Griffiths is expected to be fit for Easter Sunday’s game in Dingwall as the Hoops play Ross County.

The striker has been missing since chipping a bone in the small of his back during international duty with Scotland during the win over Slovenia last month.

“Leigh has trained since Tuesday,” said Rodgers. “He’s looked very good and he’ll be in the squad all being well and he comes through the next few days.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has re-affirmed that he fully expects Stuart Armstrong to commit his future to the club.

Dialogue between the 25-year-old midfielder and the club has been ongoing for the last few months but Rodgers anticipates a favourable conclusion to proceedings.

“Him and I are having communication and I am sure that pretty soon we will look to get something sorted,” said the Celtic manager. “I wouldn’t say it is imminent or anything like that but there is no concern. He still has a year or so left.”

And the Hoops boss has also re-iterated that he will look to bring in quality over quantity this summer as he strives to build a side capable of competing at Champions League level.

“We have tied up a lot of players on contracts this year and we will add a few to that of quality that will allow us to continue domestically but also compete in Europe,” said Rodgers.
