22 years ago, Sinisa Gogic and his Anothorsis Famagusta teammates gave Rangers an almighty scare in the qualifiers for the European Cup, before going down by a single goal.

In the process, the striker picked up a huge compliment from a man making his European debut for Rangers in the first leg at Ibrox, none other than Paul Gascoigne himself.

So perhaps it was fate that Gogic’s son, Alex, made his first start in the Scottish game with Hamilton at Ibrox, a venue that holds so many happy memories for his family.

And even more fittingly, his father, was there to witness it.

“My dad came and surprised me at Ibrox,” Gogic said. I was doing the warm up and looked up into the stand and there he was.

“He flew to London and then up to Glasgow and met my girlfriend Chloe, who is here with me, and she was in on the surprise. He stayed a week and he enjoyed it.

“He played there as well when he was a player for Anorthosis, so it was a nice moment for both of us.

“My dad played against Paul Gascoigne, and he told me that Gazza had said my dad was one of the hardest players he played against.

“So that was a nice thing for both of us to share, and I can now say that I played in the same stadium as my dad at Ibrox as well.

“My dad played in the home leg as well and I’m told it was some game, but I was a baby so I can’t remember it. He likes to show me videos though.”

The downside to having a famous footballing dad for a current aspiring player of course, is that comparisons to the old man are never far away, even when they play in different positions.

The younger Gogic is a defender, and he was schooled in the game in the youth set-ups of one of his dad’s old clubs, Olympiacos, and then Swansea City before arriving at the Accies in February.

“It’s nice that I’m now a footballer as well and playing men’s football, and every day I talk to my dad and he’s asking how training is going and how the games are going,” he said.

“It was an inspiration to have such a well-known footballer as a dad and I loved it, but in Greece it was a bit hard because everyone compares you to him.

“When I came to Swansea, nobody really knew about my dad, and even though they slowly found out it was a lot easier to make your own name,

“My dad likes to wind me up and tell me that I’m not as good as him, but I tell him that he wouldn’t be able to outrun me now!”

Gogic is still having sleepless nights about a glaring miss he had towards the end of last week’s draw with Ross County, but he hopes to put that one to bed with a vital win at struggling Dundee today.

“I know I missed a great chance last week, don’t remind me,” he said. “If I had scored we could have been eighth or ninth, but I have to forget about that and hopefully I’ll score soon and help the team out.

“We’ve now got a massive game on Saturday and we need to try and get all three points.

“I guess they are under more pressure than us, but every team now is just fighting for the three points. Nobody is looking for draws, we all want to win every single game now.

“Every club has pressure on them, nobody wants to go down.”
