PEDRO CAIXINHA will want to bring his own players into Rangers this summer and the work on that front will already be well underway.
The problem that he might have is getting rid of the players that he feels aren’t up to the job and freeing up some money and space in his squad.
A lot of the fans would like to see a big clear-out at the end of the season but Rangers won’t pay off players that have two or three years left on their contracts.
If players want to leave and they have somewhere to go, Rangers won’t be hard to deal with. If they get an agreement that suits all parties then there will be departures this summer.
But if you get a player that says ‘I have got a couple of years on my contract and I am going nowhere’ then there is not a lot that the manager or board can do about it. It is easy to say ‘get rid of them’ but it is not as simple as that.
The squad have had all season to show what they can do and Pedro has spent his time assessing everyone both in training and in matches. He will be forming a list of who he wants to keep and who he doesn’t.
Rangers won’t bring players in just for the sake of numbers in the summer. If they are going to close the gap to Celtic, they need a better quality of player.
I saw Willie Henderson’s comments during the week about Rangers needing £50million to spend on players but that is never going to happen. We don’t have that money.
That doesn’t mean that they can’t bring in quality players, though, and the manager will be using all his contacts, as will Pedro Mendes I am sure, to try and do the right deals.
The spine of the team definitely needs reinforced and I would think there would be at least half-a-dozen players coming in.
The board will back him and there will be money given to the manager. Rangers need to get their business right this summer.
