Stuart Armstrong believes that what has happened this season is the top of the iceberg.

Brendan Rodgers is on the cusp of being only the third Celtic manager to win a Treble, while the club’s involvement in the group stages of the Uefa Champions League this season also suggested that he is a manager keen to take the Parkhead club where they want to go.

Armstrong has excelled under the tutelage of Rodgers this term after a difficult opening few months under the Irishman’s reign and he believes that he is part of something unique at Celtic.

“I think the gaffer is building something special here,” said Armstrong. “For his first season, it’s been great so far.

“We’ll be looking next season to improve upon that so it’s quite exciting for everyone involved.”

Meanwhile, Armstrong inevitably joined in the chorus of approval from those of a Celtic persuasion concerning Scott Brown’s availability for this afternoon’s game.

The Celtic captain’s red-card at Dingwall on Easter Sunday was rescinded to a yellow upon appeal on Thursday afternoon at Hampden. The player will serve a two-game suspension for going over the points threshold – a ban that doesn’t start until next week.

“I think he is a unique player in the sense that he optimises Celtic in many ways,” said Armstrong. “Of course, it’s a lot nicer to have him in the team than out of it.

“But we’ve got a very good depth of squad here and I think everyone will want to play their part.

“With Scott, though, his performances and his effort throughout the games has shown he’s a true leader.

“He’s respected very much. He’s a terrific player, there’s no doubt about it.

“He’s our leader but, as I say, I think whoever plays on Saturday will give their all for the team and show the same appetite for it.”

Celtic are gathering increasing momentum as they canter towards an unbeaten domestic record this season, but such is the reluctance to discuss it publicly, Armstrong was somewhat flustered simply being asked whether that record was what the Hoops are playing for at Ibrox today.

“No, I wouldn’t say that,” said the midfielder. “We just focus on ourselves and take it game by game and this is just another chance to get three points.

“We’ll just concentrate on performing well. What are we trying to say here? What we need to keep going is our level of performance and we’ve been doing that for some time now.

“So we want to keep pushing out good performances, keep scoring and keep entertaining. When the season is over and done then we can reflect on the statistics and what the highlights have been and what the positives have been.

“But for the time being we’ll just keep focusing on the present because that’s worked for us so far.”

The turning point in Armstrong’s season came in the opening league meeting against Rangers this season. Coming off the bench, the player netted the final goal in the 5-1 defeat of Mark Warburton’s side, an afternoon that confirmed that chasm between the sides.

It also strengthened Armstrong’s case for a chance to play through the middle and it is one that he has seized as the season has progressed.

“It was a big thing for me this season, coming on and making an impact,” he said. “I worked my way into the team after that so it was a big personal moment for me – it was my first goal of the season too.

“Obviously, me scoring against Rangers was a positive thing for the Celtic supporters.”

Given that this is now the sixth time the teams have played one another this season, there is a feeling that they may well be sick of the sight of one another.

Certainly, given the fact that Celtic have beaten their rivals in four of those games and drawn in one, there will be a degree of apprehension on the Ibrox side’s part ahead of this final meeting of the campaign.

“It’s the first time I’ve had to play two big games – and two different types of games this close together,” said Armstrong.

“There was a lot of pressure on us at the semi-final but we performed well. Saturday will be another difficult game because they’ll be looking to get some revenge.

“They’ll be looking to win just as much as we will be. They’re at home as well so they’ll have the crowd behind them as well.

“There’s always something to play for so it’s going to be tough.”
