Brendan Rodgers believes the manner of Celtic’s performance at Ibrox shone a light on the mindset within the Parkhead dressing room.

Saturday’s comprehensive win was all the more interesting because it was delivered against a backdrop in which the outcome of the game was something of an irrelevance.

Rodgers has repeatedly reiterated that he wants his players to play and cope with pressure and he has demanded the standard of the season be maintained, despite the fact the title was won weeks ago.

“It tells you everything about their mentality,” said the Celtic manager. “I said when I first came in that this season doesn’t finish until the last whistle in whatever game that is.

"I’m trying to create a squad and a team and a club that goes beyond our domestic football and that’s about mentality, you are creating an environment they can all progress in and hopefully we see progression in that.

"The exciting part is that it’s only going to get better. This is the first year of the team and they are evolving and improving. They weren’t going to be on holiday from last week. You are representing your football club and millions of supporters worldwide. There was a brilliant atmosphere today from both sets of supporters and hopefully our supporters enjoyed what they saw.”

And Rodgers also insisted that this weekend’s 5-1 win was delivered within a superior performance to the victory of the same margin back in September.

“What I look for is improvement in performance,” said Rodgers. “From the first game which was 5-1 to today’s 5-1, there is a total different dynamic to the team. They understand all the elements of how we want to play and you that in full flow today.

“At the beginning, Rangers were playing a diamond and if you are not concentrated and organised you can get outnumbered and out-passed, but the players, tactically, were absolutely superb in the game and when they had earned the right to get on the ball they were sensational.

“There was a big difference to the 5-1 at the beginning of the season to today. It was a very comprehensive win. My only disappointment is that we should have actually scored more goals.

“When I came in, I said my job was to build a team who can go into any stadium without fear and play. This is obviously one of Celtic’s great rivals so for us to come here and show that, and the goal at the end typifies it.

“Our defenders defend forward, being aggressive and stepping-in, and that’s where the fifth goal comes from, with Mika [Lustig] stepping in, winning it and scoring like a winger or a centre-forward.

“You have to fundamentally earn the right to defend in any game. How I like my team to defend is with aggression and that high-level of pressing, and the players did it right the way through from the first to the very last minute. Their physicality in the game was top class.”
