Patrick Roberts will look to put down a marker at Pittodrie on Friday night as Celtic head to Aberdeen to face Derek McInnes’ side.

There are just three more league games for Celtic to negotiate before the curtain comes down on a league season in which they have yet to taste defeat.

With Celtic and Aberdeen going head-to-head at Hampden later this month in the Scottish Cup final, a game that represents the chance for Celtic to win only the fourth Treble in their history, it will be interesting to see just how the game in the Granite City plays out.

A poor playing surface and a furore over tickets for the final ought to give the game an additional bit of spice – all the more so given that Brendan Rodgers’ side also have an unbeaten record to protect.

And Roberts is determined that there will be no let-up from the Parkhead side. Celtic have scored 11 goals in their last three games and the winger is looking for the club to continue building up their head of steam ahead of the Hampden date.

“We have Aberdeen up at Pittodrie on Friday and in my experience it has always been a tough place for us to go,” said Roberts. “It will be a big test for us again. We obviously have them in the Cup final so it will be interesting to go and play them a few weeks before that.

“Hopefully we can go and show what we are about.

“Obviously t is two different games and anything can happen in either of them. We just need to make sure that we are going into the game on Friday night fully focussed on what we want to get and how we want to play.

“It will be a good game and we’ll be confident.

“They are second in the table and I think they have shown that they are the second best team in the country this season. They are a top side who have good players. On their day they can exploit that so we have got to guard against that and make sure that it doesn’t slip.

“But I think that everyone has been able to see the hunger and the drive that we have got. There isn’t anyone thinking of holidays or getting to the end of the season, we all just want to keep the performances coming until the very last day.”

Roberts will be available for Celtic at Hampden after making the decision to pull on the Hoops rather than the three lions with the England Under-20 squad.

It is a chance for the winger to sign off after playing a part in what could be an historic campaign although what comes next remains to be seen.

A return to parent club Manchester City is imminent, although neither the player nor Rodgers have ruled out a possible return to Celtic, perhaps on a further loan deal should there be an indication from Pep Guardiola in the summer that Roberts might not get the game time he would ideally like.

Certainly, though, the player believes he will walk out of Celtic at the end of the season a far more mature player than the one who arrived under Ronny Deila 18 months ago.

“I have had more than 50 or 60 games in the first-team here and it has been huge for me,” he said. “I had to grow up here because there is a mentality at this club that you go out and win every game. You are playing in front of 50,000 people and you have to be able to deal with that and perform. I have loved every minute of it.

“I do feel that I have matured a lot as a player and as a person. It has been brilliant for me.

“You always need to produce good performances here and I think it helps you to be exposed to that at a young age. I feel as though being at Celtic and the time I have had here will help me now as I look to go on and try and keep progressing.

“The mental side of it has been just as important as the playing side of it because it has made me understand that you need to be on it all the time. You need to train the way you play and dealing with that side of things has been really good for my development.”

Roberts has netted nine goals in 43 appearances for Celtic this season. With Rodgers’ side just nine goals shy of the record of 105 goals in one season, a record set by Martin O’Neill’s side, Roberts wouldn’t mind chipping in a few more before the end of the campaign.

“It has been a helluva season so far,” he said. “We have a few games to finish off and we want to go into them with the same mentality that we have had all season.

“This is a team that always wants to score and I think you can see that in the way that we play. We are always trying to get the ball forward and into dangerous areas. The manager is always telling us that and it suits players like myself who wants to attack.

“It would be nice to have a few more goals before the curtain comes down but the most important thing is that we are doing our job and winning games.

“I had a good spell towards the end of the season last season and scored a few goals but this season I have had a real confidence about myself and I think that has been because the team as a whole have played so well.

“When there is that belief throughout the squad then I think it comes out in your game. Hopefully that will show this month as we look to make sure we finish the season on a high.”
