PETER GRANT has been named as assistant coach of the Scotland Under-21 side ahead of this summer's Toulon Tournament.

The former Celtic, Norwich and Reading midfielder will assist Scot Gemmill in France before again joining up with the Scots youngsters for their European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Scotland will face Brazil, Indonesia and the Czech Republic in Group C of the prestigious youth tournament later this month.

Grant has coaching experience at West Ham, Celtic, Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Fulham, where he is currently lead development coach.

The 51-year-old also had a spell as manager of Norwich City during the 2006/07 season, leading them to a 16-place finish in the Championship.

"I was lucky enough to play for Scotland at youth level and for the senior squad and loved every minute of it so it is a great honour to be asked to help nurture the next generation of international players," he said.

“I would like to thank Fulham for their support in allowing me to perform this role. I am looking forward to meeting up with Scot and the rest of the team later this month as we prepare for the Toulon Tournament.”

Under-21 boss Gemmill added: “Peter is a highly-respected coach and will provide us with great experience ahead of an exciting and challenging period for our young players. I am looking forward to working with him in the coming months.”

The Scottish Under-20 squad for this year's Toulon Tournament will be named at 1pm on Wednesday afternoon.
