LET’S file this under an understandably rotten last day at the office.

Partick Thistle have been brilliant this season, surpassing all expectations, and yesterday they were, in the words of manager Alan Archibald, down to their bare bones and "woeful". That's some combination.

Getting to the top six was the goal and it remains a fine achievement even if they have taken only one point from the final five games.

That the Maryhill men ran out of a steam is understandable and forgivable.

In saying that, this was a hard watch for anyone with Thistle in their hearts. Aberdeen looked like scoring every time they went forward and more or less did. It honestly could have been ten. Ah well, these things happen.

“I’ve felt better," admitted Thistle boss Alan Archibald. "Look, the players have been great, it just leaves a bad taste in the mouth after the last couple of games.

"It’s hard to have a go at them because they have been so good over the course of the season.

“There were ten players missing – we lost two on Sunday morning – and we had already had picked our team and shape. We had to change that and you could tell it.

"Some guys were out of position and I didn’t want to bring on the young lads in a game like that when we were so up against it.

“We put Ross Fleming on, a young left back, and he looks about 12, the same age as one of my kids. I tell you what, he did well, better than some of the experienced players. The kids didn’t hide. I take my hat off to them.

“They can take that into the summer and it gives us a true reflection as well. We still work to do, a lot of work to do.

“We are a top six team now but we won’t be complacent. We start afresh next season. Every other team will improve and that’s what we have to do. Hibs will come up so it’s going to be tighter at the top but first and foremost we need to stay in the league.”

There is no point in spending too much time on the Aberdeen goals. Suffice to say, Thistle had no answer to the speed and movement for their opponents who were superb.

Scott Wright, only 19, scored a hat-trick and was a menace all afternoon. Ryan Christie got two and Jonny Hayes got on the scoresheet.

So what were the Thistle highlights?

Well, at 1-0, Chris Erskine pounded on an untypical bad touch from Shay Logan but his shot, while well hit, was wide

Even when Partick got going nothing went their way, a long ball over the top sent Ade Azeez into the box, he was robbed by Ash Taylor.

Then David Amoo’s shot was saved but not held by Joe Lewis in the Aberdeen goal but he still got enough on the ball to ensure Kris Doolan couldn’t get a tap in.

It seems cruel to bring up Azeez being clean through on 61 minutes and failing to score, despite getting two shot at its.

Archibald’s name chanted by all at the end and rightly so.

A hard day, but it's been a terrific season.
