ELLIOTT FREAR has revealed the highlight of his entire career not just saved Motherwell from a relegation play-off – but also his date with Mickey Mouse.

With just two games left of the Ladbrokes Premiership season the Fir Park club’s future still hung in the balance. Victory over Hamilton Accies put Motherwell in the driving seat to avoid any trouble, but another three points against Kilmarnock in front of a home crowd was the result to keep Stephen Robinson’s side flying high for another campaign.

A 3-1 win was recorded with Frear netting the nerve-settling third as he latched on to a Louis Moult through pass to then round the keeper and slot away.

The former Forest Green winger, who only joined Motherwell in January, has revealed how his first ever goal in claret and amber – and the safety it helped deliver – meant he would not incur the anger of his other half.

Prior to moving north the pair had booked to jet off to Florida for three weeks, a trip which would have needed postponed if Robinson’s side had landed in the play-off position.

“I’m going on holiday this week with my wife for three weeks so that’ll be nice,” said Frear. The thing is I booked it when I was down south but I didn’t know when the season finished up here.

“I was really lucky we were safe.

“I was going to have to cancel it if we weren’t safe and in the play-offs. So I’m now getting dragged around Disney World. I’ll be looking forward to getting back.”

The goal was just reward for the 26-year-old from Exeter who has finally managed to knit together a run of games married with positive performances. Indeed, his set-piece delivery was just as crucial in despatching Kilmarnock as his strike, and he also bagged two assists in Motherwell’s 3-2 defeat to Inverness Caley Thistle on the last game of the season

“It was great to get my first goal against Kilmarnock and get it out of my system before the end of the season,” he said.

“I’d say it’s the best moment of my career to be honest scoring the goal. It was a massive relief for the football club and everyone involved.

“It gave us that little cushion but there is a lot more hard work to go in the summer and we will be ready to go.”

Frear was the subject of much expectation when he came to Scotland from Gloucestershire. With winger Marvin Johnson moving on at the start of the campaign, the Forest Green man was seen as his replacement by many Motherwell supporters.

It has taken time for the former Exeter City man to find his feet. He is desperate to use them to hit the ground running once his flight from the Sunshine State touches back down.

He added: “The gaffer mentioned I think we are back on the 21st of June so there’s not too much time to relax.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a massive lifestyle change for me and my wife. It was a gamble for me to come up here but it has paid off so far but there’s a lot more to do.

“I’ll work hard in the summer and come back as fit as I can.

“I’m a little bit disappointed the season has finished. The main objective was to stay up so we are relieved but on a personal level I feel I’ve got going in the last few games.

“I’ve got my assists and my first goal. Hopefully I can carry that on into next season.”
