CELTIC have the Treble in their sights when they take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday, but the Dons fans will be hoping for a similar result as when the sides met in the final of the same competition in 1990…

ANN FIELDER (via email) – When Aberdeen defeated Celtic on penalties in the 1990 Scottish Cup Final who scored and who missed the decisive penalties?

The match ended in a 0-0 stalemate after extra-time. The shoot-out was into the sudden death stage, tied at 8-8, when Celtic defender Anton Rogan had his kick saved by Dons’ goalkeeper Theo Snelders.

Up stepped Brian Irvine to score with his penalty and win the cup for Aberdeen.

ROUND MIDNIGHT (Govan) – Was Ibrox under reconstruction in August 1966? I remember a fan dancing on the girders above the Rangers End, during an Old Firm game.

A book, Football Grounds of Great Britain (By Simon Inglis), states that a roof was built over the East Terracing (Copland Road End) in 1966.

On Tuesday, August 23, 1966, Rangers lost 4-0 at home to Celtic in the Glasgow Cup. Could this be the game you mention?

TAM (Coatdyke) – If Celtic justify favouritism in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday, it will mean that Aberdeen have lost in both domestic cup finals this season. Has this happened before?

The much unwanted ‘double’ of losing in both cup finals in the same season has actually been achieved by quite a few teams in recent history.

Funnily enough, Aberdeen were losing finalists in both competitions in both the 1999/2000 and 1992/1993 seasons.

The Dons lost both finals in the 92/93 campaign by a 2-1 scoreline, with Rangers coming on top both times.

Seven years later they were at it again, losing 2-0 to Celtic in the final of the League Cup before going down 4-0 to Rangers in a Scottish Cup final most remembered for the fact that Aberdeen’s Robbie Winters had to play 87 minutes of the match in goals.

Dundee United lost both finals in the 1984-85 season, going down to Celtic in the League Cup and Rangers in the Scottish Cup.

In a much rarer achievement, Celtic finished as runners-up in all three domestic competitions of the 1983-84 season.

They finished behind Aberdeen in the league, lost to the Dons in the final of the Scottish Cup, and lost 3-2 to Rangers in the League Cup Final.

Of course this possibility is still open to Derek McInnes’ side this year, but he will be hoping that they can avoid a bridesmaid’s role for the third time this season by lifting the cup on May 27.
