At just 20 years of age and with talent oozing from his every pore, Patrick Roberts has the footballing world at his feet.

What this outstandingly gifted young attacker can go on to achieve in the game is anyone’s guess, so it puts into context the scale of Celtic’s achievement in sealing an unbeaten domestic season and the treble when he says that he doubts he will ever top the feat.

Whatever Roberts does go on to do in the game, the feeling he had as he took the acclaim of the Celtic supporters while hoisting the Scottish Cup towards the gloomy skies above Hampden will live with him forever.

Of course, he could have been in South Korea representing his country at the under-20 World Cup instead, but there was nowhere that Roberts would rather have been than in the steamy murk of Mount Florida.

And who knows? That special moment may not represent a fond farewell to the Hoops supporters despite an imminent return to Manchester City for the on-loan winger.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever play for a team who can go a whole season unbeaten – invincible,” Roberts said.

“So, I think when I look back on my career, this will be the biggest highlight – my biggest accomplishment in the game.

“It’s good to get that so young, although I hopefully have a big career ahead of me.

“This is why I made the decision I did – I was confident we could win the Scottish Cup and secure the treble. The lads are doing well out there anyway, so they don’t need me! But it’s a good decision and I’m glad I made it.

“It’s a tough achievement. To do it next year, it will be tough – but I’m sure this Celtic team have the ability.

“For me, if it is a goodbye, it will be a tough goodbye. Because it’s a massive club. Especially coming up here, they took me when I was only 19. To go on loan at a club like this is massive.

“Experience is crucial these days, especially for young players – and that’s what I’ve got here.

“If you’ve played in big games, managers know they can trust you, which is important.

“So, coming to Celtic and winning four medals is very big for me. I can take that into the rest of my career.

“I’ve been given an opportunity to play in truly massive games, to win trophies and win titles. It’s more than I could have asked for.

“I had the belief that we could do something special, that we could come here and win the trophy.”

The ‘bromance’ between Roberts and teammate Keiran Tierney is well-known, and there was a touching moment after the game as Roberts donned his friend’s kit for the trophy presentation after it was feared he may miss out

A stray elbow from Jayden Stockley ended the young full-back’s afternoon midway through the first half, with a quick trip to hospital for a procedure on his broken jaw required before he rushed back to join the party.

“Kieran’s jaw isn’t really up to talking,” joked Roberts. “But he was back there in the dressing room, enjoying the celebrations with all the lads.

“I’m glad he got there for that. I thought he was going to miss the trophy presentation, which was why I put his shirt on.

“I couldn’t see him around – but his ugly face popping up to cheer up the fans was some sight.

“I thought it was only right to get his shirt out, if he wasn’t going to make it, because the fans love him to bits. He’s Mr Celtic.

“When he did turn up, there was more anger than joy when he picked up the trophy, I think!

“I’m just delighted for him because he’s born into this club. To win a treble and go a whole season invincible at the club he supports, it’s massive to him.”

Tierney’s almost visceral celebrations as he lifted the trophy before pounding his chest and lifting his Celtic crest had the famous old East Stand end of the national stadium in raptures.

Roberts wasn’t sure though if the anger was directed at Stockley though, with the extent of the Aberdeen striker’s intent to hurt his opponent unclear.

“I don’t know,” said Roberts. “I haven’t looked back at it but he got an elbow to the face and his teeth were, well…mingin’ when I looked at him.

“Then we found out he’s broken his jaw, so I’m sure that will be sore for a couple of weeks.

“I just think he was angry because he couldn’t take part in the rest of the game. But we won the game – and he’s a part of that.”
