He said: “Whenever you are successful at a club, there are always prying eyes.

“But when you are winning things it is much easier to keep players.

“Plans for next season will already have been drawn up in the background.

“Brendan will have identified who he wants.

“The biggest thing for Celtic moving forward is that Brendan is calling the shots.

“If he doesn’t want someone to leave, they won’t be leaving. With respect to the board, it will be Brendan who sanctions anyone leaving.

“And he will only do it if he has a like-for-like replacement. It won’t be someone who costs £20million, it will be someone who they can try and develop, the way they have done with Kieran Tierney.”

Stubbs lifted the Scottish Cup last year as manager of the Hibs team that beat Rangers.

He admits that Celtic could soon leave the rest of Scottish football behind as a result of their financial muscle.

He added: “Brendan’s main aim now will be the Champions League and trying to re-establish Celtic as one of the great sides in Europe.

“And that is the problem Scottish football faces. The other teams just aren’t in a position to move as quickly.”
