The omission of Celtic’s in-form midfielder Callum McGregor from the Scotland squad last week raised some eyebrows, but the man himself doesn’t think his Scottish Cup final cameo at left-back has furthered his cause.

With Kieran Tierney a serious doubt for the clash with England a week on Saturday with a suspected broken jaw, Gordon Strachan may look to draft in a replacement to his squad.

But while McGregor would love to be involved for his country, he doesn’t think that he will be filling in for Scotland where he stepped into the breach for his club on Saturday.

“I don’t think so, no!” McGregor joked. “I’ve not spoken to the manager, I have booked a holiday so unless I get a call I reckon that is my season over.

“Of course, it is disappointing not to get the call. But the manager picks the squad that he thinks can do the job and that is fine by me.

“I just have to focus on my Celtic stuff. Getting days like this, and going on to be a Treble invincible.”

The fact McGregor’s name was conspicuous by its absence from Strachan’s squad list is a sign of the fine form that he has been in, particularly towards the end of the campaign.

He said: “I have had a great month and scored some big goals as well and that gets people talking. It is up to me to keep working hard. I will go away and get a few weeks off then come back ready to go again.”

McGregor admits his heart was in his mouth as Jonny Hayes robbed him just after the interval near the halfway line on Saturday before bearing down on the Celtic goal.

Much to his relief, the Aberdeen winger couldn’t quite put the ball on a plate for team-mate Kenny McLean, and he was off the hook.

“To be fair I think that was one of the only breakaways they had in the second half,” he said. “It was a pretty scary moment. Normally when you make a mistake like that you get punished for it but thankfully this time we didn’t.”
