ST MIRREN manager Jack Ross is expected to return from holiday this weekend to complete the formalities on a new two year-deal after turning down the chance to treble his wages by moving to Dundee

The Dens Park club had made the 40-year-old their primary target to replace interim manager Neil McCann, but were rebuffed in their bid to recruit him.

Ross is now set to confirm his commitment to the Championship club by signing an improved contract, with a new deal already agreed in principle.

In a fresh twist to the Dundee saga last night, McCann was installed in the post he had vacated only three days previously, ending any prospect of Ross making the switch to Tayside.

St Mirren had refused Dundee permission to speak to their manager, with Ross following that up by releasing a statement that stated his focus was solely on trying to “prepare a squad capable of challenging in what will be a hugely competitive Championship”.

The St Mirren board are now set to match that loyalty by rewarding their manager with a new deal as they look to seal promotion back to the top tier next season.

Ross said: “Following speculation regarding my position as the manager of the club, I can confirm that I remain focused on continuing to build on the momentum we created in last season.

"James [Fowler, assistant manager] and I have put in a lot of hard work already and will continue to do so as we strive to prepare a squad capable of challenging in what will be a hugely competitive and demanding Championship.

“It remains my responsibility to reward the loyalty and passion of our supporters with a team which they can be proud of.”

Ross succeeded Alex Rae as St Mirren manager as October and, after a difficult start to his tenure, eventually steered them away from relegation and the play-off place on the final day of the campaign.

They have subsequently lost Stevie Mallan to Barnsley but have also made a number of signings including Cammy Smith from Aberdeen
