New Bhoy Jonny Hayes is hoping taking a stroll up the Celtic Way can open up the path to international stardom.

The former Aberdeen forward has been capped four times for his country before, including playing in the Republic of Ireland's 3-1 win over Uruguay earlier this month.

But for the Dubliner, who turns 30 next month, his three-year deal at Parkhead could bring more than just a shot at trophy success and the potential of Champions League football.

As well as that, Hayes will be going out to impress former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill and play his way into the Ireland team on a regular basis.

He said: “It is a bigger stage, playing out there at Celtic Park in front of that crowd every week, and it’s a higher standard which can only help my international ambitions.

“Playing under Martin O’Neill for Ireland is a big stage too and it’s to be expected that you can cope. If you don’t think you can cope, for whatever reason, then you shouldn’t really be coming.

“Obviously, Martin has great affection for the club and you could see that glint in his eye when we were talking about Celtic.

“He was asking me about it pretty much every single day. I was reading about myself more in the newspapers and didn’t really know what was happening because I was away with Ireland, I was sheltered a little bit and I just wanted to try and do well with Ireland.

”The way everybody speaks about the club – I got a little bit of background information from Roy Keane and Steve Walford as well – you can tell everyone loves the club. Back home, everybody was asking me about it every day.

“As soon as Celtic were involved, no-one was asking me if I was going anywhere else. They were just asking me when I was going to Celtic and I think they knew that my mind was made up.”

One Celtic player who is currently making waves in an international jersey is Australian midfielder Tom Rogic.

The Hoops star was the main man for his team against World Champions Germany in their Confederations Cup group match on Monday night, with the 24-year-old grabbing Australia's first in a 3-2 defeat.

However, the selfless playmaker was unable to take much joy from his seventh goal in gold and green, saying: “It’s pleasing to score but in the end it doesn’t count for too much..

“It’s hard to enjoy it too much. It was our first game and maybe there were a few nerves in the first half.

"It's hard to look at it at from a personal level, especially in the light of the result. I think we can play a lot better and I think there was a bit of frustration within ourselves.”

“We have something to build on and know we can improve. We are confident going into the Cameroon game and we can take a lot out of this.”
