Chris Strain reckons latest signing David Winters is the perfect fit for Kilwinning Rangers as he looks to put the finishing touches to his teambuilding plans.

The ambitious Buffs boss is delighted with his weekend capture of one-time Dundee United hitman Winters, 34, who had been targeted by a number of Junior clubs following his close-season release by Pollok.

Especially since he was recently pipped by Beith in the race for Auchinleck Talbot striker Keir Milliken.

Strain said: "It’s an open secret that we had pulled out all the stops to try and get Milky to Abbey Park yet it’s probably true to say that the addition of David Winters ticks more boxes in terms of our playing style.

“His name came up when we began to again scour the ranks hoping to find an experienced striker and it’s our good fortune that he had not yet agreed a deal with any o his many suitors and was willing to come down for talks and hear how we see him fitting in with our plans.

“David is one of those players who comes alive in and around the penalty area so we are not asking him to do anything other than look to stick the ball in the net and bring others into play with his close control and eye for a pass.

“We already possess types capable of running the channels and getting beyond defences in the likes of Bryan Boylan and Ryan Nisbet so having an out and out goalscorer like David on board - I would hope he’s good for 15 goals plus -complements them perfectly and gives us a very potent attacking force.

“He is someone I have admired as one of the most prolific Junior marksmen in recent years and if he can show those same striking qualities in a Buffs jersey then I’ve no doubt our supporters will come to appreciate what he brings to the table.”

Winters will not lack for a familiar face or two in his new dressing room as he will find himself reunited with former Newlandsfield team mates Carlo Monti and Finlay Frye who joined Kilwinning’s ranks last season .

But suggesting Abbey Park is becoming a home for Pollok 'old boys' network was scoffed at by Strain who declared: "We have cherry-picked three players who were crucial to Pollok reaching the Scottish Junior Cup Final in the year before last and it’s no bad thing having a trio who know each other’s game so well.

“I actually spoke with Carlo prior to clinching a deal with David and he spoke highly of his abilities and of an understanding that had developed between them whenever they played together previously at Pollok.

“Hopefully they can quickly establish the same links for the good of Kilwinning Rangers.”

Strain has been forced to admit defeat in the pursuit of another of his transfer targets following the announcement that Rutherglen Glencairn’s versatile defender Ryan Docherty has put pen to paper for Queens Park where he has been training for the past few weeks.

The Ayrshire gaffer conceded: "I was keeping a close watch on Ryan’s case in the event of Gus McPherson opting to sign someone else in his stead but I should have known Ryan was going to impress and land himself a contract offer.”

Yet another left sided defender on the move is Arthurlie’s experienced campaigner Mark Blakey who has elected to join Beith.

And one also hears a lucrative transfer fee has allegedly been agreed between Super Premier Division rivals Auchinleck Talbot and Pollok which will see the three times Scottish Junior Cup winning centreback become the latest addition to Tony McInally’s much revamped Lok playing squad.
