Leigh Griffiths was handed a one-game ban yesterday by UEFA for "provoking spectators" in the away win over Linfield last Friday.

The Scotland international tied a scarf to the goalposts after the first leg of the second round Champions League qualifier at Windsor Park.

Celtic have been fined £4,000 for Griffiths' indiscretion and for picking up five bookings in the game.

Brendan Rodgers has urged Griffiths to learn his lesson as he spends time out of the team and his former boss Ronny Deila believes that the player can still improve – if he concentrates on his football.

“I seen over the last few months one or two things that Brendan has said, and it is the same view that I had,” said Deila. “He is a great guy, a really funny and likeable boy, but if he wants to get the best out of his talent then he has to live his life in the right way.

“He can still go up another level but you have to be prepared to sacrifice everything to get there.”

Meanwhile, Deila has confirmed that Moussa Dembele was on Celtic’s radar in the January transfer window prior to the Norwegian’s departure. Not that he has any regrets about not getting to work with the French under-21 internationalist who netted 32 goals last term.

“In the January transfer window we had identified Moussa as a player that we would like but we knew that it wouldn’t happen at that point in the season,” said Deila. “The aim was also to get him in over the summer. We thought he was a good, young, talented player and it was nice for me last season to see the impact he had at Celtic.

“He was outstanding but I never look and think what might have been. I had Leigh Griffiths nagging in goals for me and I still have a lot of fondness for him. He is a player who has fabulous natural ability.”
