THE SPFL made their position clear on Wednesday morning as they attempted to draw a line under the Rangers EBT issue and the calls that have been made by some for titles to be stripped.

But I have no doubt that there will be many that won’t see this as the end of the road. It is Rangers we are talking about here after all.

A few years ago, the fans of some clubs told their boards that they wouldn’t attend matches or buy season tickets if they didn’t put Rangers down to the Third Division.

Now there will be supporters that will put pressure on their directors not to let this lie because they feel, wrongly, that Rangers had an advantage during that period. That is nonsense.

In relation to the tax issue, that was for HM Revenue and Customs to deal with and that was nothing to do with the League. In terms of the football authorities, the Lord Nimmo Smith commission was held and Rangers were fined £250,000.

That was the punishment that was handed down at the time and nothing further can be done now, but I fear it won’t go away because you will still get a fringe that want to hammer Rangers.

As far as the SPFL are concerned now, the matter is closed after they took their own legal advice. That should be that and I think they have got it spot on.

It would be great if we could say that is it over and that we could move on. Our game isn’t in the best state and we should be getting everyone together to help improve things.

Instead, there are people focusing on one club and trying to drive them into the ground. They should drop it and look at their own team rather than having a go at another side.

Rangers have done more for the lower leagues of Scottish football than any other club has in the history of our game as the supporters have travelled up and down the country in their thousands.

The clubs have benefitted, the towns have benefitted, the local businesses have benefitted and they have helped every team from League Two to the Championship.

Now they are benefitting clubs in the Premiership as well by taking thousands of supporters to away crowds every second weekend.

But nobody says anything about that. It is all about the negatives where Rangers are concerned.

There is far too much negativity on and off the park in Scottish football right now. It is time for us to try and get back to where we were instead of everyone bickering as our game suffers.

If there are supporters out there who want to boycott matches to make a point then that is up to them. But I hope the Rangers fans continue to back their team no matter where they are playing.

There is a lot of ill-feeling right now and I am sure there will be supporters who don’t want to hand over their money to some of the clubs in Scotland.

But having the away presence at games is really important for the team, especially when you consider the numbers that Rangers take on the road.

The players and the manager need the backing of the fans in every match and I am sure the supporters will continue to go to grounds week in week out.

They have every right to choose what games they want to see and what clubs they want to give their money to.

But, as a player, I would have hated to go to Parkhead, Easter Road, Tannadice or Pittodrie without any Rangers fans there. The best thing you can do is go away to these places and win.

As I have said, we all need to move on. That won’t be easy for some Rangers fans either but they will always focus on their club first and foremost.

Over the last few years, the supporters have been unhappy with the people that have been running the game and they have felt that Rangers have been treated harshly at times.

The SPL as it was then and the SPFL as it is now is the clubs and they have to listen to their members.

In this case, the SPFL have gone to a respected Senior Counsel in Gerry Moynihan Q.C. and they have been told that there is nothing more than can be done here. Rangers have been punished and can’t be punished again. That is clear.

So Ralph Topping, Neil Doncaster and Rod McKenzie sat down on Wednesday morning and answered the questions and set out their position.

There is nothing that can be done about the past, but what they can look at is the future and that is important for Scottish football going forward.

They have done the right thing by being upfront and open and they said they are willing to meet anyone who has a question about the process. They will get the same answers as we got on Wednesday, though.

There will be some who won’t let this go but the Rangers fans won’t rise to it and they will just let them have their moans. They don’t care about our club, so why should we care what they say?

We have got enough to focus on at the moment as we look to get Rangers back to where we want it to be. Our fans will look after our club and that is the way it should be.
