MICK MCCARTHY reckons former Rangers striker Joe Garner is already proving to be value for money for Ipswich Town.

The striker struggled for form during his only campaign in Scottish football last term and quit Ibrox to clinch a deal with the Tractor Boys.

Garner has now scored six times in five pre-season outings for Ipswich after hitting the winner against Colchester United on Tuesday night.

And Blues boss McCarthy is delighted to see the 29-year-old hitting the goal trail this summer.

He said: "If we put crosses into the box he’ll score because he’s fabulous in the air.

“That’s one of his real endearing qualities – the fact that he wants to head it and he doesn’t mind competing against much bigger centre-backs to do it.

“I’m delighted with him and it was a good bit of business by us to bring him here. You wouldn’t want to play against him every week, that’s for sure.”
