LOU MACARI was part of Celtic’s renowned reserve side known as the “Quality Street Gang”, before moving south of the border in 1973 to sign for Manchester United in a £200,000 deal…

DAVIE (Lochwinnoch) – Can you give details of Lou Macari’s Scotland career? Could you also settle an argument about Lou Macari having a connection with my wee village. I say he has but my mates tell me I’m havering.

Lou played 24 times for Scotland and scored five goals. His first goals were a double in June 1972 against Yugoslavia in Brazil at the Independence Cup.

The Scotland manager at that tournament was Tommy Docherty. In October that year he scored against Denmark in a 4-1 victory in Copenhagen.

He scored another double, once again away from home, against Chile in June 1977.

Scotland won the match 4-2 which was part of Scotland’s South American tour prior to the 1978 World Cup.

Scotland drew with Argentina 1-1 (World Cup winners) and lost to Brazil 2-0.

As far as Lou having a connection with Lochwinnoch is concerned we are unable to confirm.

GIBBY (Dalmuir) – My uncle likes to tease me about my Rangers knowledge when he visits me from London. His latest claim was that he attended a FA Cup Final where the opposing strikers both went on to play for Rangers. This stumped me, do you have confirmation of such an occasion and who the players were?

The 1984 FA Cup Final contested by Everton and Watford at Wembley on May 19, 1984, fulfils this fact.

Andy Gray was leading the Everton attack while Maurice Johnston was part of the Watford strike force. Everton came out top winning 2-0 with Gray scoring the second crucial, somewhat controversial, goal.

Rangers signed Andy in 1988, he stayed one Championship winning season, his career at Ibrox just failing to overlap with Johnston's who joined Rangers in July 1989.

Maurice stayed two full League Championship-winning seasons before joining his FA Cup Final opponents Everton.

NEUTRAL JOHN (Lochwinnoch) – My pal says he remembers the great Manchester City player Mike Summerbee playing for England against Scotland at Hampden in the late Sixties. Is he correct?

He is. Mike Summerbee played in the 1968 Scotland v England match. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Martin Peters opened the scoring for England, John Hughes got Scotland’s equaliser.
