Motherwell striker Ryan Bowman is hoping Louis Moult hangs around at Fir Park so that the two can terrorise Premiership defences together.

Bowman climbed off the bench at half-time in Saturday’s win over Ross County, and his influence as he linked up with his strike partner, winning headers and upsetting the visiting backline was pivotal to swinging the game in Motherwell’s favour.

He is hoping that he showed manager Stephen Robinson enough during the second half to convince him that going with a front two of him and Moult is the way ahead for his side.

“It’s the second time we have played up front together all season,” Bowman said. “The other time was against Queens Park in the cup but it was only for 25 minutes. I got two goals that day and Moulty got one.

“The partnership worked again today, and he got his goal, which he deserved. I would have liked a goal too but the main thing is the win.

“The manager just told me to play as close as I could to Moulty. He said we are going two up front so link up as much as you can and just go and run about. That's what I did and it came off for us.

“I’ll do my best to keep Moulty here as long as possible. With all the goals he scores, people are going to be wanting him. But hopefully we can keep hold of him and if we do that it will be a massive bonus for us.”

Bowman couldn’t put his finger on why Motherwell were so lethargic in a dreadfully poor first-half display against County, but he praised his fellow half-time replacement Alan Campbell for the contribution he made in geeing the home side up.

“As players, we all know we can do much better than we did in the first half,” he said. “We showed what we were capable of in the second half. We went to the final whistle and we never give in. And in the end, we got the win.

“We could not get going in the first half. Alan Campbell came on and he was really good in midfield. He tightened things up and he got on the ball. He did really well for us. We were 10 times better in the second half.”

The win was Motherwell’s first in the league this season after two defeats on the spin at home to Rangers and away to St Johnstone.

They have now won six of their eight matches so far though when you factor in a flawless Betfred Cup campaign, and with three points now in the bag too, Bowman is convinced that his side are on the right track.

“It was vital to get three points on the board,” he said. “If we had lost today then it would start to look bad with zero points from nine. So, this was massive for us and we want to continue it.

“We also have a Betfred Cup quarter final to look forward to. If you had said to us before the season started we would have six wins from eight and we would also be in a cup quarter final I think we would have taken that.

“The Hearts manager got sacked after the group stage of the cup so it is not as easy as we made it look. We look forward to the cup quarter final and that was a big three points for us today.”
