Morton attacker Robert Thomson reckons that the strength in depth at Cappielow can have them challenging near the top of the Championship all season.

Thomson arrived at the club in the summer from Dumbarton along with Bob McHugh from Falkirk as Jim Duffy strengthened his attacking options, with Jai Quitongo and Gary Oliver already in place.

Thomson has hit the ground running, bagging three goals so far for his new club, including the equaliser in Saturday’s draw at Inverness as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season in the league.

After experiencing the difficulties of trying to compete in the Championship with a smaller squad at Dumbarton last season, Thomson says that a fear of losing his place in the team is keeping him sharp.

“There is competition in every position here,” Thomson said. “Going through pre-season, we were a wee bit light with defenders especially with a few guys out injured.

“Getting everybody back fit has definitely given us competition all over the park, which can only be good.

“A lot of clubs now are running with smaller squads, going for 16 or 17 boys, which is good in the sense that it keeps players happy, but at the same time, you don’t have that depth if you get a couple of injuries.

“That is the main difference, having people capable of stepping in, over the course of the season.

“Sometimes at Dumbarton last season we were struggling to pull a full bench together, and that can make things difficult.

“It’s a long season, so as people pick up knocks it is important to then have somebody to step in and someone to fill the bench too.

“You know you have to perform every week, because there are good players waiting on their chance.”

Thomson has set his sights on bettering his goal tally from last season with the Sons, and he feels that can do it with the chances that are being created for him by his teammates.

“It’s obviously a big thing for a striker to get off the mark with a goal as soon as possible, it can play on your mind before you get your first goal,” he said.

“Getting the first competitive goal a couple of weeks back and now my first league goal was certainly a relief.

“I finished on 11 league goals last year, and I’m always looking to improve, so I’ll be trying to get more than that if I can.

“The boys have been great creating chances for me, and I maybe should have had another goal at the weekend with a chance I should have done better with.

“The fact we are creating those chances is promising though, and all the boys that are playing and even the boys on the bench are more than capable of creating chances.

“Hopefully, as long as that continues, the likes of myself and the other forwards can keep capitalising on them.”
