One-time Motherwell and Morton defender Jordan Halsman has shown perfect timing in proving his worth to seal a signing deal with Cambuslang Rangers.

For it comes as he prepares to lock horns in tonight’s Somervell Park head-to-head against his former Junior club St Roch's.

The 26-year-old has impressed playing as a trialist in recent outings and according to Lang gaffer Paul McColl is “in the running for a jersey” in the Central Sectional League Cup quarter-final showdown between the clubs.

The Cambuslang boss said: “ I think it’s important that Jordan puts pen to paper as someone with his insider knowledge of St Roch's could prove an asset in what has all the makings of another hard-fought contest

“ We played them twice in Central First Division meetings last season and each time lost out on a 1-0 scoreline, and I can see things being just as close to call, even though both sides have made a lot of personnel changes during the close season.

“Unfortunately, a number of bodies are unavailable to us tonight for various reasons.

"However, this is where we benefit from having Jordan and the likes of Ryan Kerr, Henry Mitchell, Adam Boyle and Craig Hastings who were all rested on Saturday to call upon.

“Hopefully this strength in depth will help us get us over the line as we want to do well in this competition even though the league remains our No.1 priority.”

Seasoned frontman John Gemmell's two-goal haul helped Cambuslang get their Super First Division campaign off to the best possible start with a 2-0 victory over Kilsyth Rangers last weekend though McColl believes his players should have won with a few more goals to spare.

He said: "I’d be first to admit we left ourselves a bit open at times but there’s no denying the guys could and should have converted a few more of the openings that were created over the 90 minutes.

“And I don’t think we can afford to be quite as wasteful when heading through to face Larkhall Thistle as their very tight pitch doesn’t lend itself to playing football so teams opt to be a bit more direct and goalscoring chances are at a premium as a result.

“Games there tend to develop into battles and right now I’d gladly settle for a repeat of our result against Kilsyth.”

In the remaining last eight encounters, Pollok are fancied to bounce back from their shock 4-1 opening league defeat at home to Kilbirnie Ladeside when facing Central Second Division outfit Forth Wanderers at their Kingshill Park outpost.

The defeat brought to an end an eight-game winning run for Tony McInally’s men.

Strong-going Renfrew will look to the partnership of Scott Morton and veteran frontman Jamie Docherty for the goals to ease past visitors Gartcairn.

Meanwhile, an intriguing head-to-head is promised at Holm Park where Clydebank host the visit of reigning Cup holders Rob Roy who were their quarter final conquerors last season.

The Ardagh Glass Cup pairings favour Glenafton getting the better of Craigmark while home advantage could prove crucial in enabling big guns Kilwinning Rangers and Hurlford United to overcome lower league opponents Irvine Vics and Largs Thistle respectively .

However, the possibility of Super Premier new boys Girvan dealing a Hamilton Park knockout blow to last season’s beaten Ardagh finalists Auchinleck Talbot has not been helped by Talbot’s 4-3 demise against Rob Roy at the weekend as Tommy Sloan’s side will undoubtedly be extra fired up to make amends.
