ALBION ROVERS have been kicked out of the IRN-BRU Cup after fielding an ineligible player in their first round win over Spartans.

The League One side fielded Liam McGuigan as a substitute during last week's tie, which finished as a goalless draw before Rovers won 5-4 on penalties.

The SPFL held a disciplinary hearing on Thursday and charged the club with a breach of the competition's rules, as McGuigan had not been registered at the time and therefore was not eligible to play.

Albion Rovers pleaded guilty to the breach and the result has now been annulled, with Spartans awarded a 3-0 win and the Cliftonhill club receiving a £2000 fine.

The Lowland League side now progress to the second round of the competition, where they will face Linfield at home in Edinburgh.
