Leigh Griffiths believes the stage is set for another wonder free-kick as Celtic prepare to host Paris-Saint Germain in their opening group game of the UEFA Champions League tomorrow night.

The striker sat out the Friday night win over Hamilton Accies as a precaution after taking a kick to his calf last week, but he is itching to go against the glamorous Parisians.

Griffiths hit the headlines in June with his two set-pieces that beat England’s Joe Hart at Hampden and he is keen to try and replicate that feat tomorrow night if he gets the chance.

“I hope I haven’t had my shot at glory with those two against England but I just keep practising,” he smiled. “I work on my free-kicks every day and you never know – if we get a wee free-kick around the edge of the box tomorrow night then I think it is maybe time for another one of them to go in!

“You never know. Certainly, what we do know is that against a team like this if we do get a sniff of any chances then we have to be making them count.”

Moussa Dembele is in a race to be fit for the game, while 19-year-old French loan signing Odsonne Edouard impressed on his debut for the club against Accies when he got himself in among the goals.

Griffiths, though, would seem the most likely to start the game against PSG and for all that few would realistically afford Celtic much of a chance against the likes of Brazilian playmaker Neymar and teenage strike sensation Kylian Mbappe, the striker is insistent that Celtic will have no inferiority complex going into the game.

And it could be a set-piece that gives Celtic some way into the game.

“We are under no illusions how hard it is going to be,” said Griffiths. “But at the same time anything is possible in the Champions League, especially at Celtic Park. We turned over arguably the best team in the world at the time when we beat Barcelona so we know it is going to be difficult but with the crowd behind us then we feel like we can go out and do anything.

“There are a few of them who have played here before and I think we have a reputation for making it hard for teams when they come to Celtic Park.

“We have to make sure that we are difficult to beat.”

Griffiths is also keen to watch how Brazilian playmaker Neymar does on his return to Glasgow.

The former Barcelona star has a bit of history with Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig from games between Celtic and Barca, with Griffiths anticipating another chapter in that one.

“Scott and Mikael have a bit of previous with Neymar,” joked the striker. “He had a wee kick out at one of them but he was quick to backtrack when they were coming at him! I’ll be interesting to keep my eye on that on Tuesday night.

“But in all seriousness, we are fully focused on this game. It is massive. It is great to have the Champions League and be involved in it and you want to go up against the best players in the world.

“It will be a tough night for us but we’ll go out and look to give a good account of ourselves.”
