WHILE the immediate celebrations were cut abruptly short, Jozo Simunovic is hopeful penning a new deal at Celtic will open the door to more prosperity in the Champions League.

The defender put pen to paper on a contract Monday that will keep him in Scotland until 2021 as he eyes further success to add to the two leagues titles, League Cup and Scottish Cup already tucked away.

Just 24 hours after announcing that deal, though, he and his team-mates were given the runaround by a rampant PSG who sliced open their backline five times during a fraught night.

But while life in the Euro zone is painful in the immediate aftermath of defeat, Simunovic is confident the Scottish champions can continue to make strides in the continent in the coming weeks, months and years.

“I am very happy about the extension,” said the 23-year-old. “It shows the club believe in me and I am very happy about that.

“I always go day by day although the contract is for four more years. I hope we will be champions for the next four years and also continue to make progress in the Champions League.

“It would be really good if that [10-in-a-row] happens.”

Reflecting on the game itself, Simunovic was a tad frustrated, but also pragmatic. The imposing centre-half was caught somewhere between acceptance at the formidable opposition Celtic faced, while also believing the hosts could have done more to at least slow down the French march to victory.

He said: “It was a very tough game for us, especially at the start because we didn’t play well. The second half we were better but the scoreline showed everything.

“We can learn a lot of things. We will analysis things with the coach and make sure we are at our best for the next game. We have to look forward and learn from this type of game. That is the most important thing.

“We wanted to play our game but they are such a good team.

“In the end it could have been a different result but now we have to look forward and do better.”

Simunovic played a significant part in the downfall of his team on Tuesday night.

With the game poised at 2-0, it was his tug on Edinson Cavani that gifted PSG the chance to make it 3-0 to kill off the game. In truth, though, it was already an uphill task by that point.

He added: “Cavani is a top striker and the referee gave the penalty and that is that.”
