CARL McHUGH insists he sees no evidence of Motherwell’s bubble bursting as the Steelmen continue to walk on air in the Premiership.

Stephen Robinson’s men kept their excellent start to the new campaign going in the capital on Saturday, coming from two goals down to rescue a credible 2-2 draw with Hibs.

It now means Well have played 11 games in all competitions having won eight and lost just two, making them the biggest surprise package of the new football season.

However, while some may be shocked to see last year’s relegation strugglers at the other end of the table, captain McHugh is far from it.

He said: “It was just brilliant. I think it just optimises everything about this squad. Not many teams will come here, be 2-0 down and manage to come back and get a draw. I think we fully deserved it.

“The spirit in the dressing room, I see it every day. I see how we train and it gives you confidence going into games because you see how everyone is pushing each other to get into the starting XI. We have players who aren’t getting into the 18 who can contribute.

“We’ve had a great start but that’s all it is, it’s only a good start. But there’s a lot to be optimistic about.”

The team spirit McHugh eludes to was important on Saturday. A harsh penalty given against them midway through the first half and a mistake in defence shortly after the break – both of which were converted by Anthony Stokes – threatened to knock the stuffing out a team that had put so much into the match.

Yet the belief was still there to keep going and keep their momentum going ahead of Thursday’s Betfred Cup quarter-final with Aberdeen.

Having said that, being able to call upon a player like Louis Moult in attack undoubtedly helps. The 25-year-old hit man grabbed also grabbed a brace at Easter Road, taking his tally to seven for the season and five in his last four games.

“It’s priceless,” said McHugh of still having Moult in the side. “It’s priceless he can pop up like that and get us back into the games. We have Bowey (Ryan Bowman) he looks like he’s going to score. You can bring players off the bench with the strength in depth we have.

“Tanner came on and makes a difference, Bigi [Gael Bigirimana] comes on and makes a difference. We didn’t have that last year and it makes a massive change to the squad.

“It was an end to end game. Two honest, hardworking teams and I thought we gave as good as we got. We had loads of chances. Moulty had two in the first half and he easily could have had four goals. Over the course of the game we probably had the better chances.”

Motherwell boss Robinson was equally delighted with the display from his players, even though he thought they should have come away with all three points.

He said: “In truth we’re coming away a wee bit disappointed we didn’t win. They have a threat up front up top, they have real pace but overall I thought we dominated large parts of the game.

“We played some super football in the second half.”
