Celtic keeper Craig Gordon dismisses any talk of another Treble as premature

Celtic enjoyed an unbeaten clean sweep last year and they begin their defence of the League Cup this evening at Dens Park.

No-one has done back-to-back trebles but for Gordon it is preposterous for anyone to start contemplating such heady heights when the season remains in its infancy.

“That’s a long way away," said the Celtic goalkeeper. "We just have to keep winning games. We are still in September. We have a quarter-final to try and win against Dundee. If we start looking at all that too soon, then it’s a long way.

“We need to keep winning, we want to win.

"We want to get into the next round and if we do, then we are a step closer to the first trophy of the season. We still have three games to win, so (the treble) is still a long way away."

Meanwhile, the Scotland internationalist has also taken a pop at former Celtic striker and BT Sports pundit Chris Sutton.

The Englishman has publicly questioned Gordon's suitability for the Parkhead club, particularly on the European front, and his comments have not been missed by Gordon.

“It’s his opinion but he focuses rather a lot on the negatives, rather than anything positive," he said. "It’s more of a campaign.

“He had his mind made up very early on. He is trying to make everything fit his early statements. That’s his job as a pundit.

“My record against any other Celtic goalkeeper would stand up in terms of wins. The last time I lost a domestic game was against Aberdeen about a year and a half ago.

“I think he goes over the top at times and I know I’m not the only one to perceive that. There are other guys in our squad who receive as much, if not more, criticism than me.

“I’m not sure it’s a personal thing, but it seems to be.

"He’s got his opinions. I just think it tends to send the signals out to the Celtic fans. It’s a little bit unfair.

"This is now my fourth season. I don’t agree with an awful lot of what he says but I suppose that’s the case for half the players in Scottish football. I’m not alone.”

Gordon produced a save fro the showreel at the weekend against Ross County that underlined his capability.

"I’d be happy with that save at any stage of the game but when it has a wee bit more important in the context of the outcome, it’s more satisfying," he acknowledged.

“You aren’t called upon to do that all that often as Celtic keeper. It’s more about decision making and setting up the play - making sure everyone is in the right position and circulating the ball.

“That kind of thing can be ignored but it can be pivotal in terms of how the match goes. But it’s all well and good doing that side of things, but keeping the ball out of the net is the most important part of being a keeper. So that was a save I was happy with."
