KING Louis Moult of Motherwell has set his sights on becoming a club cup legend to crown his time with the Steelmen.

Well sealed a date with Ranges in the Betfred Cup semi-finals after a 3-0 demolition on Aberdeen at Fir Park on Thursday night, a game the former Wrexham man scored a stunning third after his opener was adjudged to be a Joe Lewis own goal.

Moult has been heralded as one of the best strikers the club has ever seen by some in just over two years in claret and amber.

And while a deal to extend his Motherwell reign remains unsigned, Moult was humbled and honoured at the prospect of becoming an icon up there with the Well heroes of 1991.

“Even the word legend means so much to me and my family. If we can achieve that I’ll try my absolute hardest to help this club to get there.

“It would be massive, but we can believe we can do it. We believed we could beat Aberdeen. You saw that from the first minute and I believe we can win it.

“It would be unbelievable for myself and the club.

“The football club deserves a little bit of success. We’ve had some difficult times like last year, but even the year before the manager got the sack then we went on to finish in the top six.

“There was a feel-good feeling then it dropped then we just stayed up. The fans deserve it more than anything. They turn up to every game and look at that support at the end, it just epitomises what this club is all about.

“It would mean the absolute world to me to help achieve something at this football club.”

Moult’s tally for the season now sits at eight (he’ll tell you it’s nine) on the back of a blistering start of the season that has taken his stock to even greater heights.

In the summer Rangers made an enquiry about the forward, while Thursday night’s opponents Aberdeen – who come to Fir Park on league duty tomorrow – bid £300,000 for him.

Given his showing on Thursday, it would have been the bargain of the century given the form of the 25-year-old, but he insists showing the Dons what they are missing wasn’t in his mind.

“I didn’t even think about it to be honest. I saw a few comments from the gaffer to go and prove why they came in for me and make them regret they didn’t sign me. I didn’t think about it,” said Moult.

“I just approached the game like any, tried to score some goals and I was lucky enough to do that.”

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes described Motherwell’s style of play as simplistic on Thursday night. It was a comment Moult didn’t miss.

“Well it’s obviously effective,” he said. “If we are winning games off the back of what we are doing why should we change? We shouldn’t, it doesn’t matter what people say about us.

“You can’t say one player played badly in the last six games. Everyone is working hard, there is a passion at this football club from the top to the bottom and everyone has bought into it.

“You have a hungry set of players and maybe that was missing. Everyone in that starting XI is so, so hungry to succeed, whether it’s for themselves, their family or for the football club. They are so hungry.

“When you are hungry you are a good player. The talent shows.”
