HAD Gordon Strachan been sacked at the end of the last campaign, there would have been very few people that would have complained.

There was a bit of surprise when he got another go at it and the start that we made this time around ultimately cost us dear.

But we are undefeated in the last six matches and the fans have seen the team play some decent stuff and get results again.

What Gordon was doing was getting the best out of the players he had there. We know we don’t have the most skilful squad in the world, so you need to have a team that works hard.

Gordon got that out of them but it still wasn’t good enough. Now someone else will come in, but can he get any more out of the players?

There will be a few players in that squad that are coming to the end of the road as far as Scotland are concerned and we need to bring in the young lads that are on the fringes.

They are desperate to come in and play for Scotland and they are going to be the future for the national side.

The question for the Scottish FA was whether to do that with the same manager or whether they bring in someone fresh?

There has been progress and Scotland have been better. There was a feel good factor in that squad. But we still never qualified and that is the bottom line.

Gordon had two tries at it, it never worked and now someone else will come in ahead of the next campaign.

I wouldn’t say it has to be a Scot, either. I would wait and see what applications come in, I would look around the game and then make a decision.

The last foreign coach we had in Berti Vogts didn’t work out but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t go down that road again.

It has worked for other nations so there is no reason why it can’t work for Scotland. We need the best man for the job, wherever he is from.
