BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed he’s spoken to stand-in Scotland boss Malky Mackay about Scott Brown’s future in dark blue.

The Celtic captain has already come out of international retirement once to help out former boss Gordon Strachan and question marks now hang over the midfielder and his desire to continue on for another campaign as Scotland skipper.

Brown revealed at the weekend he will speak to Mackay in the coming days, but Rodgers has told how he had a meeting with the Scottish FA performance director last week to discuss the 32-year-old and his place in the national side set up.

“I spoke to Scott, I had a good meeting. I also spoke with Malky in the week, he’s going into a game with Holland and he’ll want to do well in it as will the players,” said the Celtic manager.

“I have my feelings on it with Scott and I’ll always say that to him but ultimately it’s down to him and his body and where he’s at.

“Scotland will be embarking soon on the European Championship front, so if they can get to that he’ll be 35. So there is probably something for him to think about.

“He’s the catalyst for the team, he’s still fit, he’s still fresh. You saw the level of his game in Bayern Munch, he’s still a top-class operator at that level.

“But I also know he wants to really maintain his Celtic career for as long as he can.

“I said to him it’s worth speaking to Malky, go and have a chat and see where you’re at for this next game.”

Rodgers also insisted that with a competitive fixture for Scotland not coming for almost a year, there is no need to rush Brown into a decision.

“It doesn’t have to be conclusive now,” he said. “I think Scott knows the benefits of not playing. “He’s a passionate Scotsman as well and ultimately it’s his decision.

“He’ll see where it’s at.

“I think the next period for Scotland can be really exciting and, of course, you’ll need your best players of that.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers insists he wil not stand in the way of any of tartan troop who wish to play for Scotland in next month’s friendly with the Netherlands.

The two sides, who are out of World Cup qualifying contention, meet at Pittodrie on November 9 in the middle of a frantic run of both domestic and Champions League games for the Parkhead club.

The likes of Brown, James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong, Kieran Tierney, Leigh Griffiths, Callum McGregor and Craig Gordon are all likely to be called upon by Malky Mackay for what is ultimately a meaningless match, but Rodgers says he will not interfere if his players wish to go to the Granite City.

“It’s not ideal, with them playing so many games. But the Scottish boys love playing for their country,” he said.

“I’d never deny a player that chance. If they want to speak to me or me speak to an international manager then that’s what we’ll do.

“But that’s what I love about the Scottish boys - they are so honest.

“I’ll always have a Scottish core here, they want t play in every game and they love working.

“They want to do their bit for Scotland as well and I’m not one to talk them out of it.

“The likes of Stu have just broken in, Callum has just got in and Kieran is young. James has been around it for a while, and Broony, we’ll see what happens.”
