Hoops striker Moussa Dembele has declared Celtic “simply the best” team in the country after the manner in which they blew Aberdeen away at Pittodrie on Wednesday night.

Dembele netted twice to supplement Kieran Tierney’s strike and the French forward has maintained that on current form there isn’t a team who can lay a glove on Celtic domestically.

“I think we showed that we are simply the best team in the country,” the 21-year-old told Celtic TV. “When we are 100% fit and 100% ready and give our best no-one can beat us in the country.”

Dembele himself looks back to optimum fitness following back-to-back hamstring strains. The striker has been waiting for his chance given the fact that Leigh Griffiths has been in decent form for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Parkhead club are closing in on a 100-year old domestic record of going 62 games without defeat – a feat that can level if they avoid defeat to Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon at Celtic Park – and Dembele is keen to hang onto the jersey.

“I am fit,” he said. “Since I came back from France I came back fit and just had to wait for my time to pay. Every time the gaffer gave me a bit, I try to do my best. I was happy with the two goals [against Aberdeen] but I am happy for the win first.

“As a striker you have to be in the box. That is where you score goals. I always try to be there and against Aberdeen I scored but the game is gone and I focus on Saturday now.”

Dembele and Tierney linked particularly well at Pittodrie but Dembele has insisted that Celtic’s strength lies not in one or two areas of the pitch but in the fact that there is a collective about the manner in which Rodgers’ side play.

“Kieran had a good game but it not just him and me,” he said. “The whole team were good in the game and that is our strength. But we want to keep it going.”

Celtic will host Killie next before turning their attention to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Dembele started on the bench when Celtic played the Bundesliga side in Germany but the expectation is that given his recent form – he has scored four goals in his last two appearances – that he will lead the line for the Champions League outing.

In any case, the striker has intimated that he is in the mood to keep the goals coming.

“It is enjoyable,” he said. “I can’t wait to keep playing and keep producing for the rest of the season.

“You have to take it game by game. We focus on Saturday now and we will see.”
