RANGERS midfielder Jason Holt was pleased to see youngster Jamie Barjonas commit his future to the club after being impressed by the teenager in training.

The 18-year-old put pen to paper on a new Ibrox deal until 2020 this week as he looks to break into the first team.

And Holt assured he is willing to offer advice and support to Barjonas as he waits to take his opportunity.

Speaking to Rangers TV, the former Hearts man said: “I’ve been really impressed and I’m delighted for him extending his contract. Every time he has trained with the first team you have been able to see his qualities.

“With him being in the same position as myself, any tips or bits of advice I can give to him, I will always do that and it’s the same with guys like Ryan Jack and Graeme Dorrans too.

“I’m sure on the other hand too Jamie will always be looking to learn. It’s always great when you see young players given that chance and then them going and taking that opportunity.

“Everyone needs to start somewhere and get that opportunity, so the more opportunities we can give to the younger lads, the more it will stand us in good stead for the future.”

Holt is now the Gers’ longest-serving midfielder and could be looked on to take extra responsibility, but the 24-year-old insisted that everyone at the club is willing to assist in blooding the next generation.

He said: “I think so, but to be fair I think it does with all the boys – whether they have been there for a year or three years, they will always try and help the younger lads coming up.

“That’s the type of players we have got in that dressing room, so we will always be looking to do that.”
