IT is the games rather than the goals that are stacking up for Alfredo Morelos these days. When one tally ends, another will be off and running once again.

The striker hit the headlines with a terrific streak of scoring form earlier this season as he found the net in eight times in six matches for Pedro Caixinha’s side.

A run that started with a brace against Dunfermline also saw him net against Hibernian, Ross County, Dundee and Partick Thistle.

But Morelos hasn’t added to that total since the Premiership draw at Firhill in September and he is now without a goal in his last eight outings in Light Blue.

His efforts may not have been rewarded, but his performance levels have still been of a high enough standard to justify his inclusion at the head of the Gers attack.

“He is not getting the goals just now but he is still working hard,” former Ibrox striker John MacDonald told SportTimes.

“You can see he is getting a bit frustrated at times and getting a bit upset when he is not scoring but he is still doing his bit for the team. I am sure the goals will come back for him.

“When you are in a run like this, you can try to do things too quickly, you are too eager to get into the box rather than timing your runs and you can snatch at chances.

“He is working hard and bringing other people into the game but he wants to be scoring goals. Hopefully he can start another run and that will give him a boost.

“His next goal will be the one that gets him going again and hopefully that comes sooner rather than later.”

It is rare that a Gers forward can endure a run of several matches without a goal and not attract the ire of the Ibrox crowd.

But Morelos hasn’t come under friendly fire in recent weeks as Rangers stumbled towards the end of the Caixinha era and then picked up back-to-back wins under the guidance of Graeme Murty.

The former HJK Helsinki star played a key role in the victory over Hearts and MacDonald is pleased to see the Light Blue legions standing by the summer signing.

He said: “The Rangers fans can get on your back but that hasn’t happened with Morelos and that shows they still appreciate what he is doing.

“As long as he is doing that and the team is winning that is the main thing. But hopefully he gets his goals because he is a good player that has done well.

“Everybody goes through spells like this. I remember it happening to Ally McCoist, and look how many he scored for the club. The fans got on his back and he was our greatest ever striker.

“Morelos will get through this, all strikers do. They just need that one goal to get them on their way again. I like him as a player and he will get goals for Rangers.

“He is not afraid to have a shot at goal and he doesn’t hide. He wants to be up there, he can hold the ball and he has a good all round game.

“He is focused on what he is doing and hopefully sooner rather than later it will come good for him again.”

The frustration has been clear to see for Morelos in recent weeks as he has been left with nothing to show for his personal efforts and he has failed to find the target.

But he showed what else he can bring to the side at Murrayfield as he set Kenny Miller on his way to marking his return to the side with the first of his two goals against the Jambos.

It was Miller that started alongside the 21-year-old during his purple patch earlier in the campaign and MacDonald hopes the Ibrox veteran can bring out the best in his strike partner once again.

He said: “Kenny at the start of the season was coming short a lot of the time but the two of them have done well together as a partnership.

“Hopefully that comes back and Kenny can get himself a few more goals as well. If you can get the two of them scoring, that would be great for the team.

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you speak the same language or not. You can still develop a partnership, you know where the other is going to be and how they like to play.

“You do things knowing where your partner is, so you don’t need to talk a lot to get used to working together. They do seem to link well and Morelos looks better with Kenny back alongside him.”

Morelos and Miller are likely to be paired up once more this weekend as Rangers return to action after the international break.

It is interim boss Murty that is set to be in charge as the Light Blues look to overcome Hamilton and record a hat-trick of victories for the first time this term.

With a trip to Dundee and then double-header against Aberdeen to come, it is an opportunity to start to build some momentum in the top flight.

MacDonald said: “Everybody brings this up and now there is a chance to get three wins-in-a-row. It just so happens it is under Graeme.

“I would like to see them get a few now because we have got some big games coming up.

“If we get another couple of results, it sets it up for the Aberdeen games.

“When you win a few games in-a-row, you get more confidence and things become easier for you. That goes through the whole team when things are going well for you.

“There were spells in the last game where Thistle came into it and Rangers were lying back rather than going for it.

“Once you are in front, you have to kill them off and not let teams come back into games. Hopefully this is the start of a better run of results now.”
