GRAEME Murty believes Ryan Jack can continue to star at right back for Scotland after being impressed with how the Rangers player performed in difficult circumstances on his debut.

Jack, who moved to Ibrox from Aberdeen on a free transfer in the summer, was booed by some fans on his return to Pittodrie for the friendly international against the Netherlands last week.

However, the 25-year-old, who has played in central midfield for the Gers during the 2017/18 campaign, did well in a game Malky Mackay’s side lost 1-0.

Murty, who won four caps for Scotland, feels he would be an option for Gordon Strachan’s successor at right back when the UEFA Nations League is played next year.

“It was great for him,” he said. “He’s in a good place and has been working extremely hard and well with the squad.

‘If anything he should have more confidence in himself and have more belief in himself and his ability from that experience. Because we think he’s a good footballer.

“We think he’s an international class footballer. He needs to go and believe that for himself – that he can go and represent himself to that standard on a daily basis.

“It says a lot about his tactical acumen that he could play at right back. He takes things on board really well. He’s a good technician. He deals with the ball really well. He’s a guy you can trust.

“You can give him complex information and trust him to go and carry it out wherever you put him on the pitch.

“As a manager or a coach, it’s fantastic to have someone like that in the squad. You can trust him with whatever information they are given. It’s a specialised position right-back you know!”

Murty added: “Listen, I was always taught never get too fixation on one position. Just be really good and be able to carry out what the manager gives you.

“The way football is going at the moment, you need hat tactical fluidity and to be able to go and play different positions and to see the game in a different way.

“Different managers require different things. The more strings you have to your blow, the more complete a player you will be and the better a career you will have.

“That doesn’t surprise us. He’s a strong willed guy. He’s stood up to numerous challenges throughout his career. That was just another challenge which he took in his stride.

“He kept a fantastic level head. That’s something you would say about him. Emotionally, he’s stable.

“You get guys who get too high or too low. Ryan is emotionally stable and that’s to his credit and benefit.

“Hopefully, moving forward, he’ll increase that emotional stability and will improve that aspect of his game further.”
