Hamilton goal hero Darren Lyon may have been the toast of the Lanarkshire town after bagging a brilliantly worked clincher for Accies to seal a famous win over Rangers on Saturday, but he may have got some stick from closer to home, with dad James being an avid bluenose.

Lyon himself used to be in the Rangers youth set-up when he was younger, but made the decision to move to Hamilton in search of regular game-time.

That move was vindicated at the weekend, as he strode onto Greg Docherty’s cross to side-foot home and silence 48,000 Rangers supporters, while sending the small band of travelling Hamilton fans wild.

And Lyon knows that even though it was against his dad’s team, his old man would have been just as pleased as any one of those visiting fans.

“I was there when I was younger, and I left when I was Under-15,” said Lyon. “It is nice to come back and score but more importantly we got the three points.

“I wasn’t getting enough game time, I was pretty small, and I was only getting half an hour here and there and I wanted to get out and play football.

“Hamilton came in for me and it was the best option because I knew they gave youngsters a chance and it’s paid off.

“I think only the goalkeeper Liam Kelly is still at Rangers from the team I played with back then. It was nice to score but the win was more important to take us up the league.

“I think I made the right decision to come to Hamilton. I needed to go out and play football. Rangers never said I wasn’t too small, but I knew myself I was. Boys take stretches at different times but there was a lot of bigger boys than me in the team and they played more of the games.

“I don’t hold grudges or anything. My dad James had chats with Rangers about me playing, but they are happy to see me playing football. Dad supports me, like all dads, but he is a Rangers fan.”

Lyon went on a lung-bursting 50-yard run, outpacing Rangers defender Danny Wilson to get on the end of Docherty’s cutback to score, but he admitted he thought his effort might have been wasted.

“I thought Greg was going to shoot to be honest,” he said. “I was trying to shout for the ball, but I was knackered and didn’t think he would hear me. He cut it across and it landed perfectly because I didn’t need to break my stride. They were putting the pressure on and creating a few chances, so the goal killed the game.”

It was suggested to the 22-year-old that his name will now belong up there alongside Adrian Sprott in Hamilton folklore, the man who got the winning goal when Accies last won at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup way back in 1987.

Given he wasn’t born at the time though, it was perhaps no surprise to see a look of bewilderment appear on his face.

“I didn’t have a clue about that, I am too young,” he said. “The most important thing is the three points because we have a tough run of games coming up.

“It is nice to silence our critics, but we have to focus on what we are doing on the park and not listen to other people.

“We have the pictures up around the stadium after the Parkhead win, so hopefully some pictures of this game can go up too.”
