Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Willie Collum was right to give the Hoops a penalty at Fir Park last night.

The Parkhead side were in danger of seeing their unbeaten record slip from their grasp after a Mikael Lustig own-goal just 12 minutes from time before Scott Sinclair levelled from the spot.

Callum McGregor was bundled over in thee final minutes of the game much to Motherwell's fury, with the Fir Park side still seething about Sinclair's penalty award at Hampden in the Betfred League Cup final on Sunday.

“Motherwell have been angry with a lot since the weekend, they have been angry about everything," said Rodgers.

“Their keeper makes a great save, it rebounds out and their player makes an attempt to get the ball.

“Callum steps in front, gets his body there and he knocks him over.

“If you look at the referee, he’s in a perfect position to see it.

“I thought it was a penalty but when you are the opposition, you probably think it’s not."

And Rodgers also insisted that both Sinclair and Celtic deserved credit for the manner in which they stretched the unbeaten run to 66 games.

Sinclair was booed onto the pitch when he arrived in the second period but shrugged off the jeers to hold his nerve.

“If there is a penalty to be taken in that situation, then Scott will take it," said the Celtic manager.

“I have seen him do it in front of 90,000 people at Wembley for Swansea in a play-off final.

“That is a £100million game and he never budged – he was calm and composed.

“Whether it’s in front of 9000 or 90,000, I’d always back him to score.

“He was straight on to it and finished it every well."

Although the record was in danger of coming to an end, Rodgers has insisted that keeping the run going is not his focus.

“What’s more important is that we are here to collect points," he said.

“You see why the players have achieved what they have and why it is really special.

“You can lose a game of football for so many reasons.

“Questions were asked but I couldn’t be any more proud of the players as they continually answer questions and show their mentality."

Motherwell keeper Trevor Carson had a number of impressive stops in the game and Rodgers applauded the contribution of the keeper who kept Celtic at bay at times.

“I knew Trevor as a young guy and he was outstanding," said Rodgers. "Then I lost track of him a bit but he made some great saves.

“We should have been a couple of goals to the good but we didn’t take our chances and then we went behind.

“But the response was brilliant. We stayed calm, made some changed and put some risk into the game.

“We took a defender off but we stayed calm and controlled, and got ourselves back into it.

“The team showed our spirit and we know we can always score. We have scored in every game in this run.

“We should have been more clinical in the game but in saying that, when you go behind away from home against a tough team, it’s always difficult.

“But credit to the team – it was a good point for us."
