SIX points have been earned by Rangers. A couple have been proven as well.

The wins are always the most important factor but there were positives to take in the performances as Aberdeen were overcome twice in the space of five days.

Any victory over the Dons is a significant one for a Light Blues outfit but the Gers squad can have extra satisfaction with their efforts this time around.

Written off in many quarters before Derek McInnes’ side made the trip to Ibrox last week, they produced their finest showing of the season to record a deserved 3-0 success.

On Sunday, it was a different, and arguably more difficult, test for Graeme Murty and his players at Pittodrie. It was another they passed with flying colours, though.

The Gers squad had come under fire and their attributes – both physically and mentally – had been called into question.

The defeats to Hamilton and Dundee were two huge steps back. Once again, Rangers are looking to move forward this term.

“It was two big results for us,” midfielder Jason Holt said. “We knew the importance of the games, especially after the last couple of results.

“We were delighted with how Wednesday went at Ibrox. It was a really good win and a convincing win then we took it up to Pittodrie, which over the years has been a difficult place to go.

“To put in that performance in the first half and then show the grit and determination in the second half, it was a really good performance.

“The grit and determination has really been shown in the last couple of games and that was probably lacking in the previous couple of games. You could see that on the pitch.

“It is definitely something we have put into the last couple of games and it has helped us get results.

“It is two big results for us and the way we went about it and the performances, we showed different sides to our game.

“There were some really good moments of play and others we stuck together as a squad. We need to show these characteristics more often and take it forward.”

With back-to-back wins to their credit, Rangers now find themselves in a familiar position as attentions turn to the visit of Ross County this weekend.

It is twelve months since the Light Blues were able to string more than two victories together in the Premiership and they have already failed to achieve that feat on three occasions this term.

Mark Warburton’s side saw off Aberdeen, Hearts, Hamilton and Inverness before their run came to an end with a draw at St Johnstone last December.

The failure to better that sequence since says it all about the issues that plagued Warburton and Pedro Caixinha as they failed to live up to expectations at Ibrox.

Now, Rangers have another chance to break the hoodoo. It is one Holt is determined to make the most of.

“Obviously it is difficult and it is not great that we are even talking about trying to get three wins,” he said.

“At this club, we should be on far longer runs than that if we want to have realistic ambitions. It is something that needs to change but something we are constantly striving to do.

“I don’t think it is a mental anxiety, it is just us. We have said all along and the word consistency keeps coming up.

“It is something we, as a squad, have lacked over the last period. As players and staff, we need to change that.”

The meeting with Aberdeen on Sunday was the first of seven matches that Rangers will play this month as they enter what could be a defining few weeks.

By the time they take to the field against County at Ibrox, there could be a new man in the dugout as the Light Blues board look to finalise their search for Caixinha’s successor.

The Gers will also host St Johnstone and Motherwell this month, while trips to Hibernian and Kilmarnock lie ahead.

The final outing is the second Old Firm clash of the campaign and that will be a far more accurate barometer of where Rangers are and how far they have to go.

It is a run that Rangers are at least heading into with confidence and Holt knows it is imperative that standards are maintained and results are earned throughout a crucial spell.

Holt said: “I think it always helps when you get really good wins like the last couple we have had. It shows we have got a good squad of players here.

“If we can show the abilities we have got and the attributes you need to go and win football games when it is not always pretty, if we can show them more often then we will be on a better track.

“It is always a crucial stage of the season because the games come thick and fast. It is a testing time for any squad so if you can come through this period and come out the right side of it then I think you are always looking upwards.”
