Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood has withdrawn from Friday’s second one-day international against England due to illness.
Hazlewood took 21 wickets as the hosts wrapped up a 4-0 victory in the Ashes but was rested for the Gillette Series opener in Melbourne, where Eoin Morgan’s tourists completed a five-wicket win.
Australia had planned to restore the 27-year-old at the Gabba but he has been struggling with a virus and has flown back home to Sydney to recuperate.
The temptation to recall Pat Cummins, who has been given a game off after his own starring role in the Test series, has been resisted meaning a debut for 21-year-old quick Jhye Richardson is all but certain.
Richardson, who made his name playing for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash, has only eight List A appearances to his name but has captured the selectors’ eye with his express pace.
Wicketkeeper Tim Paine missed training on Wednesday with gastroenteritis but has been passed fit.
